We are coming together to support Annie Millar Desmond, who has stage 4 colon cancer, and has recently moved back to the Bay Area with her husband and child. She grew up here, and is back to be with her family. Annie sang in Conspiracy of Venus, as a soprano 1! (Once a Venutian, always a Venutian.) The artists in this show are donating their proceeds to her.
Annie has been told she has a year to live, though she is seeking alternative treatments and clinical trials that we hope will shift that diagnosis. Which is why supporting her financially is even more important right now. It's hard enough to move to the Bay Area as a family, but also to get cancer treatment on top of that, and to do that while losing income due to moving/traveling/treatment --- please know that your support matters. Also, regardless of the money, we just want to celebrate Annie on this night, and all that she is and gives to the world.
I've been in CONSPIRACY OF VENUS since the very first day back in January 2007, when 50 of us met in this tiny rehearsal space on Valencia Street, singing in a circle, trying to figure out what the group even would sing/do. We've been so lucky that Joyce Todd McBride has been leading the way all that time, composing complex and interesting arrangements for us to sing, teaching and encouraging us as we go. She's also singing in the group this year; we've absorbed her into the soprano 2 section!
I've learned so much and gained so much by being in this group. (I'm grateful we didn't have auditions in the beginning; but as a side note, we have auditions this Thurs at 7. If interested, lmk.) As many of you know and graciously supported, we just went to NYC for our second time, and had an amazing time singing there. So this is our finale of what is our 11th/12th season (depending which way you count it). We're singing some Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Bowie, Iris DeMent, an original by Joyce Todd McBride, among other pieces Friday night.
BEFORE OUR SET, it's important to arrive early & GET A SEAT for GENTLE SPIRIT! They are one of my local favorites, and are graciously are opening, playing as a duo!! Marcus Stoesz & Sara Gallagher are sounding amazing (evidenced
here and
here) and will be enchanting us with their harmonies. It's gonna be splendid. It's Sara's bday too! There's a lot to celebrate. Doors are at 8, they play at 9 sharp.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, after all the live music, we're gonna have a DANCE PARTY with DJ CUE to celebrate longtime member AMY SHELF'S BDAY!
Here's the same info in an easy to share format, including links to bands, FB link, & the ticket link again:
+Dance Party for Amy Shelf's Birthday with DJ Cue
THE CHOIR IS FUNDRAISING FOR ANNIE MILLAR DESMOND, who has stage 4 cancer & has moved back to the Bay Area recently to be with family. (She has actually been on this email list for years too!)
Stick around for the after-party from 11-12:30 for a dance-abration of the amazing and inimitable day of birth of CoV extraordinaire Amy Shelf. Ears will be wooed by the transfixing sounds of DJ Cue, who will be bringing you the best that hip hop, the '90's, and R&B has to offer, from his extensive and eclectic collection.
DJ CUE is a native, San Francisco-based DJ and musician, spinning everything from classics, hip-hop, and R&B to the latest and hippest EDM, and everything in between. A talented musician in his own right, Cue seduces every crowd he meets with his hypnotic tunes and uplifting vibe.

CONSPIRACY OF VENUS is finishing their 12th season, freshly back from their 2nd NYC tour, with some new arrangements to share with SF. Conspiracy of Venus is a 30-woman vocal ensemble based in San Francisco that explores the creative frontiers of music under the artistic direction of Joyce Todd McBride. Songs range from popular classics (Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” and David Bowie’s “Life On Mars”) to edgy contemporary pieces (Bjork’s “Possibly Maybe”), as well as original compositions by Joyce. Drawing inspiration from medieval music, jazz, funk, and new music, Conspiracy of Venus takes vocal music into territories not often explored by more traditional choirs.

GENTLE SPIRIT, formerly known as The Music Wrong, is the creation of San Francisco songwriter Marcus Stoesz. Stoesz previously headed the influential Kansas band Paper Airplanes, and is best known in the city of San Francisco as one of the directors of ROCK BAND LAND, a music and creativity school in the heart of the city.
The self-titled album, due out early 2016, is a rumination in depression, grief, and the crumbling and reshaping of a relationship. Much of the material was written around the time Stoesz's father passed away in 2013. The songs, in contrast to Stoesz’s older projects, are often slow and sparse, reflecting the bleak mood of the subject matter. “Ram Van” is very indicative of this signature style, which recalls Pavement’s slower, more melancholic jams. “Sucker Fish” on the other hand is an growly, angular rocker reminiscent of Polvo or Dinosaur Jr. There are elements of psychedelia and dream pop as well.
For listeners of: Pavement, Sun Kil Moon, Idaho, Yo La Tengo, Phosperescent, Devendra Banhart, Constantines.
