A small but critical section of SE Newport Way (northwest of SE 54th St, a.k.a. "Zoo Hill") will be closed for approximately 10 weeks starting tomorrow, Monday 09/15.

From the official notification page (https://www.issaquahwa.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=6208):

"Starting September 15 and lasting for approximately 10 weeks, SE Newport Way will be fully closed just north of SE 54th St. This is because a section of the sewer will be placed up to 30 feet deep, below the roadway, requiring a specialized boring machine. Once this phase of the project is over, SE Newport Way will reopen for one-way eastbound traffic from December 2025-February 2026 while work continues."

Also from the official page:

"During construction pedestrian access along the roadway and trail will be maintained."

it's unclear (to me, at least) if bikes will be allowed through the closure area. I just sent email to the project manager -- hopefully I'll hear back in the next few days.

This closure affects the following permanent routes:
Team captains for the 09/27 dart should keep this closure in mind.

I heard back from the project manager:

"The bicycle lane on the north side of the road will be closed.  We will maintain the pedestrian/bicycle access on the south side of the road.  We may require bike dismount within the construction limits (1,200 ft)."

So the closure will be passable by bike, but you may have to walk your bike through the construction area.

Thanks for doing all that research Keith!
Is it for sure that bikes can travel in both directions thru there (albeit perhaps only on foot)?
That’s a lot of routes affected, but at least only 10 weeks!

Sarah, I was there yesterday and can confirm bikes can go through in both directions.
