My current generation Garmin 840 actually works very well for me. No particular navigation issues related to the unit.
For a long ride, I often download the Ride with GPS route for offline. That can be helpful if I get lost or need to go off track and need a bigger map, for example, to reach a hotel off course.
Both my phone and Garmin work off USB C, so a small, lightweight external battery like the Nitecore gives me the extra power that I need. The Garmin itself has about a 20-24 hour battery life in practice.
But that’s all I need.

I use RwGPS for primary navigation and secondary track recording. My Garmin is the primary recording device and stats display. I've relegated Garmin navigation to backup because I had enough of the sub-par navigation experience to the point
