Just in time for the 600, your venerable v1 Wahoo Elemnt is semi-bricked:

How ironic. After years of not trusting Garmin and instead using my trusty and reliable Elemnt Bolt (V1 and now V2), I will reluctantly switch over to my Garmin 1040.
This is all going to be a stain on Wahoo's reputation.
Oh how the tables have turned.

I can confirm something is wobbling on my Roam V2 related to routes and RwGPS syncing.  My issues are not as described in the V1 bricking, but none the less, I’ve lost confidence in this thing and Wahoo’s abilities to offer a stable platform.

Wahoo just sent out an email acknowledging the issue and saying the fix is a top priority.

In other reports, it may be a more widespread issue in 2038 if not addressed.

And v3 units are not affected. They may have had  a different crew working on them

at last my non-purchase of a separate bicycle computer pays off :).

instead of making an emergency purchase to have something with you for the 600k this weekend, an alternative - load the Ride with GPS app on your phone & go to the route (possibly download it), then "use / ride" the route from within the app - you'll get turn-by-turn directions announced while riding - your only challenge will be battery life of your phone (I turn wifi off, lower the screen brightness & run the battery on low power mode & can get between 250-300k from a single charge (YMMV))

Wow.
Oddly, and fortunately, my Roam v1 worked this past weekend.
I do always have a phone (w/ RWGPS), battery pack, and cue sheet as well.

A couple of points about the RwGPS phone app:

Put your phone in Airplane Mode to maximize battery life. You can turn Bluetooth on manually if you need it. For even more battery life set the app to Keep Screen On "Never" and rely on voice navigation.

"Download for offline" to the app so you won't need cell service.

If you don't have a paid rwgps account I think you need to be logged in to the SIR RwGPS club account when you pin the routeto get voice navigation (app speaks the cues). I have a paid account so I can't test this.

Weird point: if your cellular radio is on but you don't have service, the app won't navigate a downloaded route. I think it needs to phone home to check your permissions. In airplane mode it skips this and will navigate.

Good luck!

I use RwGPS for primary navigation and secondary track recording. My Garmin is the primary recording device and stats display. I've relegated Garmin navigation to backup because I had enough of the sub-par navigation experience to the point that I also figured out some workarounds to reset the navigation while recording when it gets confused.

Anyway, I was asked about my tips for using RwGPS (on iOS).

Steps I use:
  1. I carry a quick charging 10,000 mAh battery bank (some of them have wireless charging which is less efficient but good for when it rains and is better than messing up the iPhone connector)
  2. Occasionally I carry a GaN quick charger
  3. Pin the route
  4. Download the route for offline use once it is final
  5. Reboot iOS. Especially if you notice battery % dropping quicker than expected.
  6. At the start, put RwGPS in Offline Mode (RwGPS "... More" -> Settings -> toggle on Offline Mode). I've found that if I don't do this, sometimes it will suck power quickly.
  7. At the start, put the iOS into Low Power Mode (iOS Settings -> Battery -> toggle on Low Power Mode). This turns off many background services which suck power. RWGPS suggest not doing this though; the only issue I've notices is the app can go mute and require a reload.
  8. At the start, turn off WiFi.
  9. I leave Bluetooth on for audio cues via Shokz Open Run bone conducting headphones and for text messages showing up on the Garmin
  10. Load the route (currently it is via Library -> Offline -> select the route)
  11. at the start time click Navigate
If RwGPS gets confused or goes mute during the ride it is usually no problem to: swipe and kill the app, reload the route from Library -> Offline, click Navigate). The trace picks up where it left off.

cheers,
Mitch

Wow.

My current generation Garmin 840 actually works very well for me.  No particular navigation issues related to the unit.

For a long ride, I often download the Ride with GPS route for offline.  That can be helpful if I get lost or need to go off track and need a bigger map, for example, to reach a hotel off course.

Both my phone and Garmin work off USB C, so a small, lightweight external battery like the Nitecore gives me the extra power that I need.  The Garmin itself has about a 20-24 hour battery life in practice.

But that’s all I need.
