Hi -

Do we need to use Openrunner to use the PBP routes that Audax sent? Does anyone know if it is possible to use RidewithGPS?

Nicole,
I'm not an expert on this topic.
I downloaded the tcx files from Openrunner and uploaded them to my Garmin (530).  Other types of file types were available and I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who recommends a different file type for my 4 year old Garmin.
I also uploaded the RWGPS files that are available on the SIR site, which is what I typically use for navigation.

Between these two options I hope to have functional navigation.

Hi all,

Mark Thomas made and shared this very detailed Ride with GPS route based on the official Open Runner files: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43983241

I suggest making a copy and editing based on your daily/control goals, as the full trace might be big for your bike computer. I was able to edit start and end points without too much trouble using RWGPS on my phone but had to use the web version to duplicate the route a couple times first.

Mark, please correct me if I’m misconstruing anything here!

Phil

I created that RwGPS route based on tracing work done by another rider. I have no reason to doubt the work he did, but in the end, I was more comfortable doing my own trace.

When I saw the recent post from the ACP with new OpenRunner files, I did my own. Here’s what I did: I took a RwGPS upload of the OpenRunner outbound and inbound routes. I traced them with Google Maps base layer manually, not auto-trace. I added controls and food stops. I then stepped through them with "Review Cues." In that step I corrected a few errors, deleted a bunch of extraneous (to me) "Straight" cues, and changed turn designation at roundabouts from "straight" to "left" or "right" if those better matched what was happening at the roundabout.

The result of that effort can be found here - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44034822 and https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44033932

I’m planning to use those instead of the one that you linked.

Mark

Thanks, Mark, for providing the links to your routes. When I received the official routes from ACP on 8/7, I did a straight import from OpenRunner directly into RwGPS without any editing. When comparing both of our routes, the thing that jumped out at me was the discrepancies in elevation:

My routes:
Out: 15,855ft
In: 17,326ft

Your routes:
Out: 19,939ft
In: 20,975ft

I superimposed both of our routes using the route planner, and I do not see any deviation between the two. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the elevation. I don't see how tracing could affect the elevation in RwGPS, but maybe it recalculates the elevation as it is traced?

I noticed the same.

I think the tracing replaces the elevation data for each point in the GPX file with new info from the base map, which changes the total elevation.
