Fleche team "Duh, Fleche Mode" is looking for one or two more riders. The current roster:

* Eddie Bishop (captain)
* Julien Erard
* Me

Our route starts at Cutter's Coffee in Lacey at 10:00 AM Friday 05/15. Rather than ride the ~10K from Cutter's to the La Quinta (boring), we're going via Westport and Raymond.

Here's the route:

Anyone out there looking for a team?

What average speed will the team be riding, I would want to make sure I could keep up.

Bradley,

One of the interesting side effects of the Fleche being a 24-hour ride is that once you’ve established the distance, you’ve also established the average speed.  A 360 km minimal distance route in 24 hours is an average speed of 15 km/hr.  If the team goes slower than that, they are DSQ’ed.  If they go faster than that, they may have to wait at the 22-hour mark so they ride at least 25 km in the last two hours.  If they average faster than 16.75 km/hr., they run the risk of getting to the 22-hour mark with more than 2 hours to kill.  Since they can spend no more than 2 hours at the 22-hour control, they have a problem if they arrive in less than 20 hours.  You won’t slow them down too much.

The team was kind enough to give you their RWGPS route and start time.  It’s the start time that would cause me the most concern, but only because I know my body, my preferences, and my riding style.  My preference would be to have a start time that would put me at a location just over 200 km from the start where services are available.  For Duh, Fleche Mode, that looks to be Raymond at 225 km.

Raymond offers, not only the McDonalds, but also a Thriftway and a Subway.  The problem for me would be: they’ll all be closed by the time I get there given a 10:00 am start.  I would prefer a 7:00 pm start with the intent of eating a warm, hearty sit-down breakfast in Raymond.  I would rather face that last 132 km with a full tank and riding in the daylight than with an empty tank and riding into the darkness with the hardest time to stay awake still ahead of me.  But that’s just me.
