From Portland, the logistics look a mite daunting - start and end are
in different places; leaving a car in downtown Seattle over a
weekend...

Plus I am pretty darn sure I'd be the Lanterne Rouge :-)

Any advice?
Thank you!

Lynne -

The finish is just up from the Bainbridge Ferry terminal. You take the ferry back after the ride and you're about a mile (maybe less) from your car. Many folks will be leaving cars there.

I'm predicting spirited competition for LR. Don't take it for granted.

If looking for a hotel near the start and train station, there is a Silver Cloud Inn by the stadiums on 1st Ave S which is very close to both.

The start and finish are a short distance from the train station.
Since the start is at 6 in the morning, it makes sense to come to
Seattle the night before. Find a hotel downtown near the ferry - the
Edgewater Inn is pricey, but you'll get a good night's sleep.

From the finish, it's maybe a mile to the ferry, and then 5 blocks to
the train station.

Hotwire has an unnamed hotel no more than 2 miles from the ferry
terminal and probably closer. It's 4 Hotwire stars, which means it was
a 4 star place in 1995 and now looks a little tatty. $144.

The Silver Cloud is less mystery and quite close, but about twice as
expensive.

I have stayed at the Best Western Pioneer Square hotel (77 Yesler Way, (206) 340-1234a couple times.  It's maybe two blocks from the ferry terminal.  It was nice, but not cheap and they have secure parking.

For the truly budget minded, there are three hostels within about a mile
of the ferry terminal downtown. This one is highly rated
(http://www.cityhostelseattle.com) and probably quieter; you can get a
private double for $73, or bunk up with fellow randos for $35 pp. This
one is closer to the ferry (http://www.greentortoise.net), but probably
noisier, as it's right across from PP Market, on First (nightlife + cars
driving over cobblestones). This one's right by the train station
(http://www.hiusa.org/seattle).
