I recently had dinner with Elaine Jameson, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Cascade 1200.  Through our discussions, it became apparent to me that there is still a shortage of volunteers for the Cascade.  I have volunteered to work in one of the kitchens and told Elaine that if she gets in a pinch for help that I may be able to work another control.  I know that there are always a few very hard working volunteers that step up every time and bust their humps to put this ride on, many of them getting less sleep than the riders.  The club always manages to pull off a great ride but it is often at the expense of the same hardworking people.

If you are not going to be riding the Cascade this time around and are going to be in the area during the event, I urge you to volunteer some time.  It doesn't take a great deal of time and it exposes you to a different side of randonneuring.  It doesn't require any special skills and can be a lot of fun.  If you can sign a control card, wipe tables, cook, wake people up, drive a cargo truck, guide weary riders to the shower, wash towels, help roll up large wrestling mats, dispense ice socks, or any other of the hundreds of duties an event like this requires, your help is wanted.  SIR is one of the greatest randonneur organizations in the world and it is all because of the members that are willing to step up and volunteer.  The course for the Cascade will always provide an epic backdrop but it is the people along the way that will make this a ride that people will remember and talk about long afterwards. Come on out and be one of those peoples.
