For the past year or so I've tried to do a better job of counting new riders for each event. By "new rider" I mean "someone who does their first ever organized RUSA ride with SIR".
This metric falls a bit short in two areas:
* If someone from outside the USA comes here for an event, creates new RUSA & SIR accounts, and completes the event they will appear as a "newbie" even if they have completed rides in other countries.
* If someone registers for RUSA & SIR then only rides permanents, they won't be counted here at all. They need to do at least one organized SIR ride to be on my radar.
With those limitations in mind, here are the stats so far for 2026:
Newbie members: 23 (including two for this weekend's ride).
Newbie members who completed at least one ride: 15
Considering that in 2025 we had about 200 active riders in the club, that's a huge increase, and it's only March.
Speaking of 2025, here are the stats:
Newbie members: 35
Newbie members who completed at least one ride: 28
We are *way* ahead of last year's pace.
IMO most of this is due to Phill Neff's "Rando 101" clinic back in January and his social media activity. Well done, Phil!
