Hi all,
I hope you all enjoyed this spring’s 400K.
The only real complaint I heard from you all was about the stretch in/out of Port Townsend.  I already have some ideas on how to alter this for next year.  Yes, you complained about the hills but I’ll take this to mean that course was just a good challenge.  Any other suggestions or comments please e-mail me off the list at wmet...@yahoo.com.
If you haven’t been to the website, we had 42 riders.  The results are posted.  We raised about $175 for the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center Food Bank.  Thank you for your donations.  Pat and Larry greatly appreciated the gesture and thought the event was great if yet a little crazy.  They more than welcomed us for future events.  So I’ll take this to mean that you as riders were very polite and courteous of the Celtic music event already planned.
I think this course will become a classic because it is beautiful, challenging and excellent preparation for events that are similar in terrain including Paris-Brest-Paris, Endless Hills and the Taste of Carolina 1200’s.
I hope you all a great time…it sounded like it.
Thanks for coming out and riding.

Thank you to all who organized and supported this superb event.

The course was awesome. When the scenic portion from Belfair to
Hoodsport is the "boring" part of a course, you know it's excellent.
I enjoyed the climb to Lake Cushman, and even more the Dabob
Peninsula.

The organization was great, the support well-judged (enough even for
new riders, but not so much that it detracted from the spirit of
adventure), and the weather cooperated as well.

Thank you all!

I enjoyed that course just about twice as much as Jan did (time-wise that is), and i can second the comments on the scenery along the way (gawking at pretty green and colorful things being a good alternative to shouting "shut up, legs!"), and totally share in the heartfelt thanks to organizers and staff at the controls. Merci !

Thanks for all the wonderful support!  As the pain subsides and the amnesia sets in it was a great first 400k for me!

Kudos to the volunteers for putting this ride together and being so helpful at the controls -- this was a marathon not just for the riders but also for the support crew.

Congratulations!

The first one always is the hardest. There doesn't need to be much
pain - although we pushed the pace a bit, and my legs were tired the
next day.

Thanks!  My knees wish they weren't in pain but they were.  I have some tendon problems that shifted from the inside of my right knee (leftover from the 300k)  then moved to the outside of my right knee.  I've had a few bike fits so I'm not sure what's going on.

That is a common cycling injury, and many of us deal with it. Mine
flared up during the 400 as well. (Bummer!)

It appears to be mostly due to muscle imbalances. I have found that
stretching and going to the gym to work on stabilizing the knee and
countering the muscle imbalances works best to keep this in check.

I have years when it doesn't flare up at all, and others when it
comes and goes. The gym has helped tremendously. Work with a good
trainer to design a program.

Also, working on your spin and thus putting less strain on the knee
with each pedal stroke is helpful.

Bike fit appears related a bit - if your seat is too low, you are
more likely to hurt on the inside front. Saddle too high results in
strains in the back of the knee. But seat height also is based on
what you are used to. After all, your ankles articulate, so your
pedal stroke can adapt to different seat heights.

I wish there was a simple solution. Many riders never experience it
at all - lucky dogs!
