If you’re going to try them out, my suggestion is to start in a large, empty parking lot. I found that riding on aerobars shifts my weight forward and changes the handling of my bike just a little bit, but noticeably. I also found that it rotated my hips a little bit forward. Tilting the nose of my saddle down, just a notch, took the increased pressure off my favorite perineum.
I hate the way they make my bike look, but they give me a position to get the weight off my hands, and therefore relieve the pressure on my carpal tunnel nerves. Before aerobars, my hands were numb for 4 to 8 months after a 1200 k. I couldn’t button my shirt and I was looking at surgery for relief. Aerobars, ugly as they are, have saved me from that.
