If any of you are interested, I'm going to be teaching a class on OpenSCAD this May in Fremont. You can find it here: http://www.makerhaus.com/ under Classes -> Digital Media -> Design for 3D printing: OpenSCAD and Thingiverse. Solid modeling with OpenSCAD is much different than traditional CAD, but also uniquely powerful. The class isn't free, but at least the software is. If you want to see what kinds of things are possible with OpenSCAD, check out my designs here: www.thingiverse.com/emmett

If I could run Openscad without it spontaneously rebooting my windows machines this would be awesome :)

That would be an issue with your display driver, not OpenSCAD.  If you can get a certified driver (e.g. from Microsoft) that should take care of your problem.

Since my ATI drivers are almost always up to date and no other program causes this behavior I have to disagree. *shrug*

what version of Windows are you using?    are you overclocking?

if you've everything you can think of for the video card (reinstalling the drivers, etc) my favorite two techniques for solving mysterious crashing issues are to first run a memory test and if that ends well to run prime95 to look for heat problems

http://mersenne.org/freesoft/default.php   (this program looks complicated, just do the "stress test")

Windows 7 x64, not overclocked. The system has no other issues whatsoever regardless of what I have run in the 6 months or so since I last tried OpenSCAD.

The January update might have changed something, but it's just not worth the risk, I do too many other things with that machine to have it spontaneously reboot on me. Perhaps when I have the spare cash to build a second decent machine I'll fire it up again.

I guess i'm just griping, it's a bit of a sore spot for me. :)

A user-mode program (like OpenSCAD) can’t make your computer crash.  Drivers can.  OpenSCAD uses OpenGL, and perhaps your “up-to-date” driver has a bug in its OpenGL implementation (not an uncommon issue for drivers focused on gaming performance).  I suggest you try using a WHQL certified driver, even if it isn’t the latest and greatest.  Certified drivers pass a huge set of tests (including OpenGL tests) to get certified, so it is a rare bug that gets past those tests.

How many other CAD programs that use OpenGL have you run in the last 6 months?

https://github.com/openscad/openscad/issues/53 Doesn't look to me like this was a driver issue.

Blender has run fine, as has Google Sketchup.

Sorry to hear that, though from the comments it looks like they fixed it a few months back. If not, you should submit a bug report. In any case, it's always worked just beautifully on Mac, and there's a Linux version too.

This class is starting up this Saturday, so this is your last chance to register if you're interested in learning OpenSCAD. I think there are still some open spots.

Thanks Larry. Yeah, I've got my booth there again this year. How about you? It was great when you helped watch my booth last year; you're always welcome if you have some extra time.
