Managing Partner/Founder
Founded Buzios Dye Works, a garment dyeing business with start-up
capitalization of $2,000. Grew the business to $1.5 million in annual
sales and 40,000 square feet of production space within 3 years. Client
base included local apparel and clothing manufacturers;
Negotiated all major contracts;
Superior financial management enabled successfully growing the business
purely through internal financing;
Managed all production, personnel and accounting/finance functions:
Hired, trained, supervised and motivated 100 employees (production,
warehouse, dyeing, technicians, shipping and receiving, and managers);
Increased production from an average of 30,000 garments per month to
330,000 garments per month by third year of business;
Developed a 24 hour business with multiple shifts and shift managers;
Coordinated the efforts of the materials, production and technical
departments to develop an efficient production process.
1988-1989
Editora Logos Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Business Representative and Branch Manager
Opened branch office in Rio for Editora Logos, a medium size printing
company headquartered in southern Brazil;
Introduced the company to government bidding in Rio de Janeiro;
Negotiated an adjustment of 10% to an already concluded government bid
of $950,000;
Established and developed effective business relationships with top
executives of multi-million dollar companies in Rio de Janeiro and
governmental agencies including accounts with the commander in chief of
the Brazilian Navy, the Brazilian Ports Authority, and the Red Cross;
Negotiated a $200,000 barter with the CEO of Carbras Mar, a major
Brazilian boat manufacturer.
1984-1988
Nautica Magazine Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
General Manager
Opened and managed the Rio de Janeiro-based operations of Nautica
Magazine, Brazil's largest boating magazine;
Computerized all phases of the business, became Brazil's first magazine
to be wholly produced with desktop publishing software;
Recruited, hired, trained and managed an 18 member professional staff
including photographers, journalists and advertising sales
representatives:
Streamlined the editorial and production process resulting in on-time
publication and increased efficiency of the departments. Reduced late
printing from an average of 40% to 0%;
Established and managed the advertising department in Rio resulting in
a significant increase in sales;
Acted as public relations liaison with all major advertisers;
Revised the procedures of the subscription department resulting in a
reduction of subscriber complaints from 10% to under 2%.
Developed the International image of Nautica at the Miami and Chicago
Boat Shows;
Negotiated and contracted with international journalists and
photographers;
Negotiated article exchange and copyright purchases with sister
publications in the United States.
Negotiated the sales and delivery of past issues to be sold in Angola
and Mozambique, where the primary language is also Portuguese.

LIFE EXPERIENCES
Lived in England for seven years. Attended high school at Farringtons
and Davies, Laing & Dick in London.
Traveled throughout the world including three months as a noviate in a
Buddhist monastery in Thailand, three months trekking on foot in the
Himalayas, three months in New Delhi and other regions of India, and six
months in the Amazon wilderness.
Other interests include blue water sailing and racing, skydiving,
skiing, hiking, horticulture, chess, and book repair.
