BEHOLD! EMP’S MYTH & MAGIC FAIRE

See the realms of Middle-earth, Oz, Narnia, Westeros, The Land of Ooo, and many more descend upon Seattle Center on Saturday, July 12. Join EMP to celebrate all things fantastical!

New artifacts from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will be unearthed! Be among the first to lay eyes upon EMP's newest artifacts bequeathed from the realm of Middle-earth including Bilbo and Frodo Baggins’ Elvish dagger, Sting; Aragorn’s sword Andúril; Saruman’s staff; and Gimli’s (“and MY axe”) axe.* These artifacts will be on display for one day only.
 

MYTH & MAGIC FAIRE: DAY FAIRE

Spend a day spellslinging, potion-making, and questing as EMP is transformed into a land of myth and magic. Enjoy a variety of activities at Day Faire including Medieval-inspired crafts, face painting, and heroic archery, and marvel at a giant LEGO® display of J.R.R. Tolkien's Rivendell and new artifacts from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Be immersed in screenings of The Last Unicorn, Adventure Time, and a sing-a-long version of The Hobbit (1977). All Day Faire tickets include admission to all EMP exhibits.

SUMMERTIDE FEAST

Take a seat at the royal table and partake in a banquet of Medieval-inspired fare that would make the likes of King Robert Baratheon and Peregin Took weep for gluttonous joy. Quench your thirst with wine, mead, ale, and grog. Special guests and surprises await thee at the Summertide Feast!

EMP is on the lookout for high school-aged youth to take an active role in shaping EMP programming by joining EMP’s Youth Advisory Board. Last year alone they acted as a driving force behind Sound Off! the Northwest’s premier battle of the bands; offered KEXP DJs feedback on the Seattle all-ages music scene; worked as the early focus group to shape the 2014 City of Music Career Day at EMP; and fostered relationships with numerous Seattle-based youth arts programs.

MEET THE NEWEST MEMBERS OF EMP’S SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY HALL OF FAME

2014 INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED

Every year, EMP members are called upon to nominate their favorite figures from the fields of science fiction and fantasy to induct into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. EMP’s Hall of Fame Induction Committee—science fiction and fantasy authors, artists, and other professionals—then deliberate and make their final selections.
 
Welcome this year’s inductees! Visit the Hall of Fame, located in Icons of Science Fiction, to learn about these and other influential creators:
  • Artist Frank Frazetta, who created many science fiction and fantasy book covers, paintings, movie posters, and more
  • Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki, one of the most popular storytellers in the world and creator of numerous fantastic worlds including My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away
  • Author and screenwriter Leigh Brackett, whose career spanned writing pulps in the 1940s to co-writing the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back in the 1970s
  • Author Olaf Stapledon, a pioneering science fiction writer credited with inventing some key ideas found in the genre, and the first to create a sweeping “future history”
  • Film director Stanley Kubrick, whose 2001: A Space Odyssey is a landmark science fiction work

SEPTEMBER 24–28 AT EMP

Decibel Festival2014 marks the beginning of an exciting partnership between EMP Museum and Decibel Festival. Since 2003, Decibel Festival has introduced attendees to leading-edge multimedia art from around the globe and solidified itself as one of the premier electronic music festivals and promotional organizations in the world.

This year from September 24–28, Decibel will host their opening gala, media lounge, conference, film series, and happy hour events at EMP, and several of their most anticipated audio/visual showcases across three of the museum’s state-of-the-art venues.

SCIENCE FICTION + FANTASY SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

CALLING ALL FILMMAKERS!

Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film FestivalEMP Museum in partnership with SIFF presents the tenth annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival. Filmmakers from around the world are encouraged to submit animated and live-action science fiction and fantasy films to this acclaimed festival. Admitted films are judged by a nationally recognized jury comprised of luminaries in the fields of science fiction and fantasy. Films must have been completed no earlier than January 2010 and be 15 minutes long or less.

CLAPTON’S “BROWNIE” ON VIEW IN EMP’S GUITAR GALLERY

Guitar GalleryExplore the history of rock ‘n’ roll’s instrument of choice. EMP recently added four electrifying instruments to Guitar Gallery: The Quest for Volume. More than 55 vintage, world-changing guitars from the 1770s to the present are on display, and include recent additions like Eric Clapton’s Fender Stratocaster affectionately nicknamed “Brownie,” Jimi Hendrix’s white Strat played at Woodstock in 1969, Greg Ginn’s Dan Armstrong ADA-1 lucite guitar from Black Flag, and Carrie Brownstein’s Epiphone SG from her Sleater-Kinney days.
