Busted my SE/30 -- that didn't take long!

I acquired myself an SE/30 during Nick's going-away sale, and I'm sad to say that I've already busted it beyond my ability to repair it.

Specifically, in trying to disconnect the hard drive's power cable from the analog board, the header came off completely. At a minimum, it needs to be resoldered--something I have no skill with, as it's the same big dumb fingers that got me into this mess in the first place.

Is there anyone proximate to the Seattle/Ballard area who might want to help me fix this, and possibly restore the machine more broadly? (It's filthy as anything on the inside, it should probably be recapped, and likely other work I can't even imagine right now.) I'd like to build my hardware skills but I'm unlikely to do so outside of a social or semi-social context (because there are always other projects).

I don’t know of anyone local, but I’m talking to this guy about getting my boards recapped/cleaned:

Amiga of Rochester - Vintage computer repair located in Rochester, NY

I can’t vouch for him personally, but he seems to have good reviews and is responsive to emails.

Shipping is the major complication, though. If you find someone local, I’d be interested if I need someone for the future.

If it’s just resoldering a header, I could bring my soldering station to the next meeting and we could take care of it.

Hi Jon,

I'm probably a little too far north to be of much help (Mount Vernon), but my suggestion would be to take the SE/30 to a SRCS meet-up.  I'm sure that there are many guys there who would be glad to help with the task.  It's the 4th Saturday of the month in Kirkland.  See the SRCS web page for more specifics.

I'd love to make it to a SRCE meetup... but it's tough for me to make that work with my schedule. (Nothing consistent a conflict, but this month it's a once-yearly volunteer commitment; next month it's the same week as my chemotherapy so I'll likely be laid up in bed; June is clear so far but odds are it'll be my daughter's birthday party that day, etc.)

Plus I suspect there's a lot of work to be done across multiple sessions, and I thought it would be fun to do so with a consistent buddy. But if nobody wants that, maybe I'll be able to make the July or August SRCS meetups...

Man, chemo…sorry. I don’t know if you checked the calendar though, May is going to be the 5th Saturday due to a conflict with our host on the 4th Saturday. April is a bummer to miss, and would possibly be a perfect opportunity because we’re meeting in an engineering lab at UW Bothell!

I have a backlog of projects, promises, and work…but could maybe help you out. Mind sending a photo or two to the list of what happened?

Not sure if you remember me from another time - back when Seattle Area System Administrator’s Guild was a thing. Happy to see you here! I hope we can make a meeting work out with your schedule.

J.P.,

Of course I remember you and it's great to "see" you here! (Well, I've been seeing you here as I've been a long-time lurker on the list, but you know what I mean.)

Alas, the 5th Saturday of May I'll be in New York to celebrate my father's 75th birthday. In general, my weekends get booked far in advance, and I do prioritize family over hobbies much of that time.

I'm talking with Chris L out-of-band, but for what it's worth, here are the pictures...

That looks like a surprisingly clean break and very repairable. The hardest part for me would be figuring out which direction the connector goes since I am not an SE/30 guy.

I have a ton of soldering stuff and if access with a soldering iron is easy this would be a quick job. I’m in Queen Anne.

Yup, easy fix. Let me know if you need help with it. I’d maybe consider ordering a new connector since that one might have shrunk so it keeps the plug a little too secure.

Do you know of a good resource to help me figure out exactly which connector I need? I might want to pre-buy the others adjacent to this one as well...

Speaking of these SEs, Classics etc. Does any place sell replacement video cables? They go bad and I'd rather buy a new one then manually fix the old ones.
