Date: 23 November 2024
Time: 11am - 4pm
Place: Clubhouse
Kirkland, WA
Directions: https://www.sea-rcs.com/more-about-srcs/

Next meeting is Saturday 23 November 2024.

Reminder, there’s 5 Saturdays this month, we meet on the fourth one - this Saturday! It feels like it came up quick this month. If you didn’t blow away come on over. With luck this weekend won’t be BYOE (Bring Your Own Electricity) but we’ll try to update you if power isn’t back soon.

The format of Seattle Retro-Computing Society (SRCS) meetings is roughly a disorganized show-and-tell or exhibition of member computer systems or related artifacts. Generally we don't have an organized presentation but if this interests you please contact us. SRCS meets on the fourth Saturday of each month with some adjustment in December for Christmas.

SRCS meetings are graciously hosted at a member's residence, please respect the space and neighbors. We have power and a good amount of table space available for you to bring your retro computing system to show, demonstrate, or in some cases repair. We are not a repair facility, please coordinate any assistance offline or in the SRCS social medias - maillist/googlegroup or Facebook. If you show up with a broken computer and no plan you should expect some disappointment.

If you choose to bring a snack, food, or drink item to share, we have a table for refreshments. Have a large system, special network or power requirements? Please check first if we are able to accommodate or make special arrangements to best show your system.

Greetings, all. I hope this note finds you safe, warm, and with electricity. Alas, as of this moment, I still do not have power at my house, and therefore, as of this moment, we are not going to have an SRCS meeting tomorrow.

However, things may change between now and tomorrow morning, so I will post an update then. I'm also open to the meeting starting a little late if it seems clear that electricity will be restored but not by 11:00 a.m.

TL;DR the substation near me was restored to operation just before 11:00 a.m. today. Another part of my neighborhood, that has a different feed from the substation, had its power restored at 3:00 p.m. I can see the broken and down the line that is preventing me from having power. It is about 3 blocks up the street that you all use to get to my place. Several hours ago, the cleanup crew came through and cut down the tree that caused the line break and hauled away the debris. Since then, there has been a vehicle stationed there with its hazard flashers on, to alert residents to stay away from the wire that is now hot on one side.

The person with that vehicle has no idea when the crew might arrive to restore service. As with most of the other entries in the PSE app, there is a generic date and time listed for service restoration, so there's really no information about when. One can speculate that the repair crew should be onsite soon, since preliminary steps have been completed, but I don't have any actual knowledge of their workflow.

Thanks,

--Kent

Hi Kent,

I wouldn't worry about our little meeting.  Take care of home first and enjoy the electricity when it gets restored.

May I suggest a Zoom or Jitsi call in the interim, for those who can? I'd love to meet everyone, since I'm in Olympia/Lacey and cannot make it to any of your meetings in person.

Thanks!

Good morning everyone. There will be no SRCS meeting today. I am still without power and there is no crew working on the downed line a few blocks for me yet. The PSE app says a crew has been assigned but they have bumped the completion date out 2 days. (If I were PSE, I would deprioritize this particular restoration, because it apparently only affects the 72 people on that street.)

On the bright side, the app says there are only 86k PSE customers still without power, so it shouldn't be too much longer.
