Hi everyone,
This week we studied hyperreals and non-standard analysis. We walked through examples of the fundamental theorems of calculus using hyperreals and then tried to tease out how the hyperreal field is constructed. I found a really beautiful explanation after our meetup that I'll bring copies of next week (it's formal and it has some well-thought out notation and illustrations).
Next week, there was much interest in returning to machine learning. To that end, we will be reading chapters 20 and 21 from Information Theory, Inference, and Learning Algorithms. You can find a legal copy of the book here (http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~mackay/itprnn/ps/). Both
chapters combined are only 16 easy to read pages so this should be a manageable bite-size chunk for Monday. Either before or afterwards, we can spend a few minutes finishing up the hyperreals. It shouldn't take long -- this explanation is much easier.
Nile.
