SLF LASER & AERO FLEET
RECAP FROSTBITE #5
February 4, 2024
Strong wind and partly sunny sky greeted us for a terrific afternoon of racing.
The wind blew in at about 15-17 and gusting perhaps up to 20. It sure felt stronger because the northerly was bucking up against a steep ebb tide and the resulting waves made it challenging to steer through and keep the boat moving. There were six RS Aeros battling for favored position at the starts on an appropriately short start line. Race Committee Mark Reed and Steve Reese started us with few windward-leeward races and then added a reaching mark for the the remaining races (6 or 7 in all?). The waves made for great surfing downwind and lively jockeying for inside position on the turns.
As the lone ILCA (7) I tucked in tight behind at the start and managed to stay in the mix from start to finish. Not having sailed for the last 6 months, other than Frigid Digit a few weeks ago, I was all thumbs, constantly getting my lines crossed, feet snagged in the mainsheet and all the other blunders expected. All in all it was great practice day for me and counts to time-in-the-boat! I hope to have some more Lasers on the water for the last two Frostbites.
Thanks to RC Mark and Steve for taking on the duties. While most Frostbite races are intentionally short, it was a nice change having the legs a bit longer and getting further out in the deep water where we could get the most out of the big wind and exciting reaches.
Frostbite #6 and #7 are on the following dates and will draw this 2023-2024 Frostbite season to a close. Please mark these on your calendar and plan to join in.
Frostbite #6 is on February 28, 2024
Frostbite #7 is on March 17, 2024
NOTE: Frostbite #7 is March 17, which is a change from the original date (reference email from Dan Falk on Jan 6)
Cheers,
Mark Ross
