Hi Brian,

First, I feel you - the "wife knife" or "husband hater" or "partner denier" thing with solar can be real. As a solar pro 8 years now I can also tell you there have been so many false starts with solar shingles because of the business model required to support scaled implementation. It's part roof product, part electrical product and there are very few solar shops that have that blended expertise and many stop supporting these products once starting. I believe Pinnacle Roofing still offers it (here). Pros: the Tesla tiles do look pretty good in my opinion, and they are supposedly quite tough. The downsides (and they're a good shop so they should share this stuff with you too) are: no shade optimization for trees or roof obstructions, you have to get your whole roof replaced even if there's life in it to get solar power, and I very uncertain product roadmap / support if your installer closes shop.

Also, could you actually see solar from the street / back yard? And have you looked at some of the all black stuff (https://www.a-rsolar.com/portfolio/residential-projects/)?

Cheers,
Michael O'Brien

Anyone familiar with the current state of the art for solar shingles?

I have been thinking about Solar Shingles for some time, but not so much
that I want to give Elon Musk my business. However, it fairly recently
looks like quite a few more players have entered the market... One called
Luna caught my eye as being a potential candidate.

Is anyone not named Tesla installing solar shingles around Seattle these
days? Because of my wife's preferences, shingles are my best hope: She
very much does *not* want panels.

My roof is currently composite shingles on a dutch colonial style house,
and it is about 20 years into it's 30 year rating.

I did my own 4800w system 5 years ago and have some black backing on black frame panels from Itek before they went out of business (got WA solar source credit though) and I think they look better than the others out there but you really can't seem my roof like a Dutch colonial roof would be. There are also some nicer looking mounting systems that hide the racking gaps better than others. I also think panels look more compatible with metal standing seem roofs.

I think you would be taking on a huge amount of risk as an early adopter of solar roof panels. I have heard of many nightmares with the Tesla tiles. Making hundreds or thousands of electrical connections with thermal expansion and water especially in our climate seems really hard to guarantee. Adding the probability of leaks to just ensuring power generation is another level of risk. Also, so many of the domestic solar companies are long out of business so the 20 year guarantee is usually worthless (like mine).

What if you just do black frame panels on the top shallow slope roof areas our your roof so you cannot see much panel?
