Getting gas switched off

Hi,

We were able to electrify our house over the past year and have been very happy with results (Mitsubishi HyperHeat pump was overkill, Induction range is a dream, simple electric DHWH will only use ~1000 kWh a year for us 2, is silent, and doesn't make the TV room, where its located, cold).

So, I excitedly called PSE for the big switch off.
They have a Contracting Services division at 1-888-321-7779.
After leaving our information, we were contacted by a proficient project manager.
He informed us that our gas line is shared with our neighbor, but runs mostly through our yard.
So, disabling it will mean not only cutting and capping at our meter, and a small hole on our side to cut and cap at the street, but also applying for a permit for a new line for the neighbor, so their line wouldn't trespass on our property.
Our neighbor has concreted over the ground around their gas meter.
To hook in the new line, PSE will have to jackhammer the concrete and repour.
Unfortunately, we are not close with our neighbor (not antagonistic, but not a lot of communication), and I'm afraid they're not ready to go electric.
There will be no cost to the neighbor for the new line, but this has got to be $10k worth of work that will be shared with all the other rate payers.
Also, we're concerned that this amount of work with the neighbor might create some antagonism.
PSE PM said that if we leave the line in place, PSE will continue charging us $11/month.

Has anyone on this group had similar experiences or any suggestions?

Thanks,

Greg

Thanks for sharing, Greg - an interesting conundrum that is likely to increase in frequency.

In this case, does it not work to cut/cap at your meter and then establish an easement for what is now just your neighbor's line?

We went all electric and asked PSE to remove the gas line to the house - cap it at the street if I am using the correct terminology. That work was completed - fortunately no concrete jack hammering except out at the street. I assume that there is some fire hazard/risk to your home by keeping gas lines in place that may come close to your house? I would want to get the line removed if it were my home. A major earthquake for Seattle is long overdue - a lot of lines are going to rupture.  In the future - won't all these gas lines need to be removed once the inevitable transition away from gas occurs?   The situation with your neighbor is unfortunate and of course, must be considered by you. Cost to rate payers is also unfortunate, but PSE's entire business model is unsustainable from an ecological point of view and we'll all pay in the end.

Maybe send this story to some of the legislators interested in decarbonization… Rep Ramel, Sen Shewmake? (assuming that they manage to get reelected…) Ramel’s bill last session included a bit that would have cancelled current PSE’s ability to provide a ratepayer subsidy of up to $4k or so to help reduces new customer’s bill for the cost of extending a gas line to provide service...

Best wishes,
