This June I'll be singing in the northwest premiere of Christopher Tin's major work, The Drop That Contained The Sea. It's a major orchestral and choral work, featuring music from singing traditions found all over the world. "World Music" is often a misnomer, but in this case, it applies—this is a pan-global work of music.
Though Tin is best known as a video game music composer (Civilization), his concert works are deeply environmental. Every movement of The Drop That Contained The Sea features texts from different peoples worldwide, sung in their local languages, discussing the importance of water to their lives and cultures.
This concert will feature over 200 choral singers, 50 instrumentalists, and a dozen vocalists from different singing traditions worldwide. I want to call out, in particular, a 13-year-old South Asian-American Carnatic singer who is an absolute prodigy and one of the most skilled and musical singers I've ever heard.
Here are the concert dates. Would love to see some of you there!
June 1st, 7pm, Mount Baker Theater, Bellingham, WA
