Hey guys,
You guys wanna hear a story?
So... Jessica, Austin, Jordan, and I tried to track down the person in
charge of this recycling business. We found out that Mr John McMahon
will not be the Director of Facilities and Plant Operations any
longer. Alexis Fein, who is part of Sustainable Capitol Hill directed
us to David Underwood, President Killpatrick's secratary. He said
that Killpatrick doesn't know a lick about recycling and waste stream
matters, and we would have to wait until they had appointed a new
Director of Facilities if we wanted permission to rework the trash can/
recycling bin scenario. So basically ended in a dead end.
But out of chance, while Jordan was looking for his lost keys, I asked
a passing janitor if he knew anything about what was going on. He
handed my questions over to Diane V. Magnan, the Evening Custodial
Supervisor. She gave me the lowdown. Basically, they don't care. A
few years ago a club had reworked the system to what it is now, but
it's become out of date and dysfunctional. She said it is pretty much
up the students if they want to recycle or not, and she was completely
behind us in wanting to change it around. She also will direct the new
Facilities Director our direction as soon as she knows who it will be.
TL;DR: Diane Magnan she gave us the go ahead.

yea yeah! now we need to put together some signs for the recycling,
some sort of very obvious labeling.
Who wants to do a work party sometime over break?

For a little while, the school discontinued recycling altogether. Just last year, the school began recycling again. It is co-mingled because basically the only thing worth separating out to get kickback from is cardboard. We, the Sustainability Committee, are aiming to p up official signs by the bins the first week of winter about recycling.  At the end of the last school year, the school had just entered into a contract with CleanScapes.  The Sustainability Committee was going to research into companies that were more affordable for the school but was told that the contract was intact so until it was over, CleanScapes is the company we use.  Also, the school apparently had contracts with a couple of other companies before and were not pleased.  I do not know what displeased them but that was the information relayed. Hope this helps your club a bit. The Sustainability Committee is open to working with your club in projects so don't be afraid to ask.  For winter quarter, it would be nice to have a liaison for our two groups. I will work on it as part of our recruiting process.

awesome! we'll definitely have to collaborate!
I think I'll be getting back into town around the 27th. Maybe then or
the first few days of the year we could get together.

Woooooo!

Hey gents, good sleuthin'!  This confusing system is quickly being exposed as something perfectly easy to work in/with.  I'm so very excited about the progress we've made and pleased to hear that our ideas for change are welcome!  My home is always open for a pot-luck & sign crafting gathering during the holiday break.  I'll be able to get some dates and times to the group by next Tuesday 12/13, or as soon as my schedule becomes available.

Stay warm,
Jess
