Hey everyone,

I hope you had a good spring break despite how short it was. Some of
the members of the network got together last week and made a list of
some goals that we're going to be working on. Feel free to add any
goals or projects you're interested in working on to the group and
we'll add them to the list.

1. Ban the bottled Water Campaign
The sustainability committee(a student government group) and the
network have been working on a campaign to ban bottled water from
being sold in the bookstore and the cafeteria at Seattle Central. One
of the ways we're doing this is by reaching a deal with the bookstore
and cafeteria to stop stocking brands of bottled water when we sell a
certain amount of reusable bottles from the bookstore. So far we've
banned around 3 or so brands from the bookstore, but have a bit more
work to do to ban the remaining 4. We've printed out coupons approved
with student funds to take 6 dollars off the price and have been
working on getting those out to people. In addition to this route
we're also tabling every week with a petition we're going to send to
the administrators to bring political pressure to ban the sale in
vending machines and other various ways bottled water is sold.

2. Composting
Last quarter we launched a program of putting a composting bin in the
middle of the cafeteria and are going to do something similar. We're
currently starting a program with the culinary program to compost pre-
consumer scraps in the green house. Over the spring break a few
members got together and installed these "compost cones" in the green
house and are being used to compost.

3. Sustainability Coordinator
Last quarter we met with the North Seattle Sustainability Coordinator
on ways to put in a sustainability coordinator for Seattle Central.
The way North Seattle obtained their Coordinator was to write grants
and proposals to the student budget committees appropriating funds for
a sustainability fund. We're working within the student government to
write up proposals and find out how the budget process works to get a
sustainability coordinator put in place.

4. Eco Bike
Following North Seattle's lead, we're also working on installing eco
bikes in the gym. These bikes would plug into the electrical grid the
same way you plug in your computer or tv, and as people pedal they
would put electricity back into the grid. Right now we're working on
the funds the make a couple of these bikes.

Those are some of the projects we're currently working on. If you're
interested in attending any of these meetings please contact me at
bukowk...@gmail.com and let me know what times you're available so
we can find the best time that works with everyone. Thanks and I hope
to see you around.

Ian,
Good to hear from you. I am still interested in volunteering 1x a week to help out the petitioning. I am also still committed to the display at the bookstore and will ask Aurelia when would be a good time to do one.
Also last quarter one of the groups in Greg's class came up with an amzing logo promoting Tap...would you be interested in checking it out? They would be prfect to put at drinking fountans and near vending machines.
Best days for me this quarter for meetings regarding the water campaign project are the following: M after 2, Tuesday , W after 2.
Hope all is well and talk soon,
Christina

Hey Christina,

Are you available on monday around 2:30 for a sustainability network
meeting? If that's not available I know for sure that wednesday at 2
is when the Sustainability Committee meets at the ASC room in the
student leadership offices. If you could come to both please let me
know and I'll give you the locations and get the word out. (The
Sustainability Network can't really decide on a place or time to meet
is why I don't tell you this info now).

Thanks,
Ian

Good day!

First, I would like to congratulate you all on progressing your campus agenda (as an aside perhaps you'd be interested in the following: http://www.nwf.org/Global-Warming/Campus-Solutions/Resources/Reports/Generation-E.aspx).

As you may know, the Broadway Farmers Market will be located on campus and runs for 33 Sundays from May 8th - December 18th between 11am - 3pm. As part of the agreement to use our campus, SCCC has the opportunity to stage an outreach booth (and a produce booth in the future if and when a student farm is developed).

At this moment, there are no takers across campus departments so I would like to know if the Student Sustainability Network (or E.A.T.?) or Club would be interested in representing SCCC, farmers market related programs such as SAgE, Culinary, Biology, etc., and the Network of course. Furthermore, SAgE also has access to an outreach/demonstration booth at the Mother Earth News Fair in Puyallup on June 4th and 5th.

In both cases, please get back to me as soon as possible if interested.

Cheers, Jason

Also - Perhaps the Network could collectively discuss this at your next meeting or I could attend the next meeting to move things ahead in an efficient manner.

Hello all,

The SCCC Outreach Coordinator, Gina Nakamura, informed me that she and her student volunteers will in fact have a booth representing SCCC almost every week at the Farmers Market which runs for 33 Sundays from May 8th - December 18th between 11am - 3pm. If your group would like to join them to conduct outreach about the Network or about SAgE please let me know which Sundays you would like to lend a hand and I can include it on the calendar and direct you to Gina.

Thanks, Jason
