Just throwing this out there--I know just about everyone is broke as a
joke right now, but these two book events caught my eye. Maybe one of
them can be our Nov/Dec book and people can attend the lecture if they
want? It's actually pretty reasonable, I think, since the book is
included...thoughts?

November 17, 2009
Vice President Al Gore
OUR CHOICE
Time: 7 p.m.
Cost: $25/person
(includes a copy of Our Choice)
Where: Town Hall Seattle
1119 Eighth Avenue
Seattle, WA 98101

Join us for an evening with Vice President Al Gore, in Seattle to
discuss his latest book, Our Choice, a call to action that picks up
where An Inconvenient Truth left off, providing a blueprint for
solving the global climate crisis. A co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel
Peace Prize for his environmental work, V.P. Gore illuminates the
solutions that really could work, including some bold initiatives now
gaining support around the world. Over the past few years, V.P. Gore
has led more than 30 "Solution Summits" with top scientists, engineers
and policy experts to examine every solution to the climate crisis in
detail. Our Choice draws on conclusions developed through those
summits as well as extensive independent research. Here he outlines
how the bold choices necessary to save the earth’s climate should also
be the foundations of policies worldwide to create new jobs and
stimulate sustainable economic progress.

As they did with An Inconvenient Truth, former Vice President Gore and
Mrs. Tipper Gore will donate 100% of the proceeds of the book to the
Alliance for Climate Protection, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group
dedicated to spreading awareness about the climate crisis and how to
solve it. Our Choice will be printed on 100% recycled paper, in
locally produced and sourced editions, low VOC inks, and will be
carbon neutral.

Don’t miss this memorable evening with Vice President Gore at Town
Hall Seattle: 7 pm on Tuesday, November 17th.

The $25.00 ticket price includes a copy of Our Choice, which each
attendee will receive upon checking in.

Reservations are required and can be purchased by clicking on the
Brown Paper Tickets link above.

Steven D. Levitt
and Stephen J. Dubner
SUPERFREAKONOMICS: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes and Why
Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance
Time: 7 p.m.
Cost: $30/person
(includes a copy of SuperFreakonomics)
Where: Town Hall Seattle
1119 Eighth Avenue
Seattle, WA 98101

Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner will be at Town Hall Seattle on
November 2nd to discuss their new book, SuperFreakonomics: Global
Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life
Insurance.

In 2005, Freakonomics was published and forever changed our
understanding of how the world works, how we really make decisions,
and even how we name our children. This revolutionary book spent two
years on The New York Times bestseller list and spawned a new genre of
books on behavioral economics. SuperFreakonomics is based on all-new
research and original studies by Steven D. Levitt, who was recently
awarded the American Economic Association John Bates Clark Medal,
given to the economist under age 40 who has made the greatest
contribution to this discipline. Levitt has also been named one of
Time magazine’s “100 People Who Shape Our World.” Stephen J. Dubner is
the co-author of both books and is an award-winning journalist.

Join us on November 2nd at Town Hall Seattle for an evening with the
men who took the ‘dismal’ out of the economic sciences.

The $30 ticket price includes a copy of SuperFreakonomics, which each
attendee will receive upon check-in.

We ended up grilling since it was so hot but I did make the rose geranium cake--turned out lovely, as you saw :)

Factory Girls by Leslie Chang is our Sept. book. I'm about halfway through it already and it's fascinating. I hope that everyone else has a chance to read at least part of it!

That would be great if you would host next time, Lorna. I think a Chinese food theme would be awesome and highly appropriate :)

Hey Betta,

Sorry to miss tonight's book club; I'm feeling sick, and I probably should sleep since I have a packed day tomorrow. (Dang, I read this month's book club pick too!) Sorry to miss your creamy cheesy chicken!

Please let me know if we're still doing that Factory Girl book for Sept. (or whenever.) I could host that one and cook Chinese food.

Best,
Lorna

I am out until October.

I bought the Jet Blue all-you-can-jet pass and am going to go travel around the US! Including Puerto Rico!

Anyone have any friends in Boston, Chicago or San Juan Puerto Rico who you think would have a house guest for 1-2 nights? :)
