Hey everyone -- as you've probably heard, there will be a fireworks show tonight (7/4) down by Lake Union. A group of us will be getting together shortly after today’s BBQ to head over and watch. The plan is to meet up at 9:15 PM in southeast tower lobby (Harbor Steps – 1221 1st Avenue, for those of you living elsewhere) and then head toward 5th and Olive to catch the trolley to south lake union, which has less of a crowd and a better view than Gas Works. This should give us time to spare since the show starts at 10:00 PM. Please shoot me an e-mail to let me know if you'd like to come. (If you plan on joining in but expect to arrive separately, feel free to call me [860-575-4984] to find out where we are.)
See you guys then (and at the BBQ)!
Brad
Oh wow – though that article contradicts what I've heard everywhere else, including on the official event website:
"Additionally, you could leave your car downtown climb aboard the Seattle Streetcar, and view the fireworks from South Lake Union. The Streetcar will provide extended service to South Lake Union Park, with service every 15 minutes until 10pm, and every 10 minutes from 10pm to 1am." http://family4th.org/info/getting-there.htm (I tried this last summer and can attest to how well it works!)
It takes a very long time to get to/into Gas Works park for the fireworks (you typically have to head over a few hours in advance). Having said that, my guess is that the South Lake Union closure will be very loosely enforced and that anyone who does show up will be allowed to stay. On the off chance that that's not the case, the south side of Lake Union is a big area (we could find a parking lot or restaurant somewhere) and in the event that doesn't work, we can come chill out here at Harbor Steps and watch the broadcast from the TV or theater room (which I just reserved :-) ).
So, let me know if you're still up for trying heading over to South Lake Union later tonight. If that doesn’t work, let’s tentatively plan to meet up in the Northeast Tower common room at 10 PM as a fallback.
See you guys later!
Brad

FYI, I just called Seattle Police who indicated that “no one here is aware” of any closure at South Lake Union Park this evening. Therefore, even if the park has been “closed” by Seattle Park & Rec, no one is going to try to kick us out. :-P
See you guys later (meet at 9:15, SE Tower Lobby) – and hope the weather clears up! J
