Hi Ian,

The tube is 2” aluminum.  I have a complete assembly including bridle wires and fastenings available to replace your lost parts for the bow tube.  If you are interested, can you send a picture of your bow tube area to confirm this will work?

Another option is to acquire some 2” irrigation pipe and fashion a tube to run across to both hulls.  This will require a lot more work and include the requirement to make some bridle wires and acquire some other stainless items.  This would however save some weight if that is important.  There are pictures on the Seaspray website or I can send some if you like.

Opening the hull up at the back can be done with a butter knife and a small hammer.  The hull/deck joint can be fairly easily separated by driving this knife in between the hull and deck and tapping the knife along to separate this joint.  Do this to the rise in the rear dog house on both sides and use a stick to hold open.  This will give access to the inside of the transom and allow you to fix the problem.  An old wood chisel and hammer will likely help a lot if the wood is difficult to remove.  A bit of innovation will help with this job.  A piece of flat aluminum plate ( 1/8” to 1/4” ) works best and will require shaping, drilling and fiberglassing in place.  Squaring of the holes allows the re-use of the carriage bolts and glassing over of the bolt heads will keep them in place.  Items required include short strand bondo putty to help with placing the aluminum plate in place, a couple of different weight fiberglass cloth to glass the plate to the inside of the hull transom and a little bit along the inside corner and hull, some chopped strand mat cut into 3/4” to 1” strips wetted and placed along the hull deck joint, a bunch of clothes pins or clamps of some description to clamp the joint after glassing.  There are a lot of pictures on the website to give you an idea.  www.canadianseaspray.com

Hi
I have a 1981 Sea Spray 15 - it's been in my family since new, and I'm
trying to get it in the water again. The aluminum tube that is normally
mounted at the bow between the hulls cracked a long time ago and is long
gone - can anyone give me the size of that tube (1-1/2", 2"??) ?

A picture of the ends of the tube mounted to the boat would also really be
apreciated - I kind of remember there being aluminum castings in the ends
to mount it to the hulls... of course they are gone with the broken tube.

Another thing I need to do is open the hulls at the rear to replace the
plywood in the transom, because the mounts for the rudders are loose
(transom almost certainly rotted out). I also suspect the hulls have the
foam that gets waterlogged and should be removed. I have heard that you
"split" the seam between upper & lower hull with something like a sharp
putty knife, but this seems to be impossible on this boat. The seams are
only about 1/8 of an inch wide, and there is no evidence of a parting line
between top & bottom. Does anyone have any further info, tips or
suggestions about this procedure?
