At the 10U level (and everywhere else), it can be a difficult thing to
explain to some why they are playing a full game and to others why they
are substituting. For our team, I use preseason evaluation, scored, to
select the top half for full-game status (nd then factor in any special
considerations). Once the season gets going, I compile the typical
scorebook statistics and start organizing the lineup and defense from
that information. As some substituting players and/or their parents
ask about racking up more playing time, one of the things I show them
is how they are comparing statistically and that our decisions are much
more objective than subjective. We try to use this to connect effort
at practice with results in games.

For the wish list, I'd like to add my suggestion for even a rudimentary
statistical applet to the next Season Planner edition. For those who
care to use it, it would allow this information to be available to
parents or visitors, much as it is once the kids get a little older and
hit high school or even middle school. Teams with much younger players
might elect not to make use of this, for obvious reasons.

As a partially related question, one of our players was called out on a
close play at the plate, but one of our parents had taken a picture
that proves he was safe. As the team's statistical person, bearing in
mind that I am most concerned with accurately crediting the players'
performance, should I record this as a run scored or an out?
