*Such incidents are on the rise and they're pointing to the fact that old boats that are not seaworthy are going out to sea.
Some time back, union leaders were saying boat owners are picking up old boats (from kozhikode I think, can't recall) and doing cosmetic paint jobs and using them for fishing. Like motor vehicles, there must be some cut-off age as well as regular inspections. Maybe it's already in place but not being enforced.
Also the coast guard must be lauded for fixing the hole in the hull bc that's not an easy job to do. I'm assuming the leak was serious bc the men couldn't pump out the water and had to sent out a distress call.
