One of the main reasons why people use EndNote is to cite references. CWYW (Cite While You Write) is EndNote's signature feature that makes citing easy. Below are the steps to citing while you write a paper in Word:
I am having similar issues with cite while you write. I am not sure how picky the insertion of citations is in the library because when I choose to cite something from the Library, sometimes it does it correctly, sometimes in adds the first initial before the last name, sometimes it does the full name, etc. The weird part is it does it all correctly on the reference page but no within text.
What versions of Endnote cite while you write have this option? I am just using Endnote online and cite while you write- I do not have a desktop version. Am I able to update cite while you write to a version that offers this?
EndNote's Cite While You Write (CWYW) plugin for MS Word is part of the desktop program installation. If you're using EndNote Web, you can download the plugin. This connects your EndNote references library with your word processor.
To use CWYW, have EndNote open while typing in Word. When you need to insert a citation, click the Go to EndNote button on the EndNote toolbar, which will bring up your EndNote window. Select the reference you want to cite, and then go back to Word click the Insert Citation button on the EndNote toolbar. This will insert an in-text citation at the insertion point and a reference listing at the end of the document, both formatted to the selected style.
You can edit a citation by right-clicking it and selecting Edit Citation from the pop-up menu. Use this if you want to exclude the author or year from a citation.
This is the functionality that allows you to automatically cite references and create your bibliography as you write your document and to choose from a variety of referencing styles in which to format your work.
When you install EndNote, an EndNote Toolbar will be installed in your MS Word program. EndNote calls this option Cite While You Write. With this you can add citations to your Word document as you write your manuscript. Using Styles, EndNote will format the citations within the document as well as create the bibliography of cited references at the end of the manuscript.
