Hi All,

Last friday, we (Sukumar, Palani and I) had a call on "Job Clinic" in SeachCamp. At the end of the discussion we concluded that Job Clinic's objectives does not match well with SearchCamp's target audience perceived value. In fact it might hamper Online Marketing Companies' participation. Therefore, we decided not to go for the Job Clinc.

As a side conversation, we also discussed a critical Problem - "People outside the online marketing domain are not fully aware of the opportunities  available here".  We decided to have a separate session focused on "Career Opportunities in Online Marketing".

Some thoughts for this session:

I just searched for "Online Marketing" on Naukari.com, it shows 9863 jobs and when I searched for "BPO" it shows 7105 jobs.  Btw, "Online Marketing" is just one of the keyword in this domain. Definitely, the opportunities available in online marketing domain are increasing day by day. Personally, I cannot think of any company that do not require Online Marketing services.   Moreover, the growth path in this domain is steep. In a very short period, an online marketing professional acquires significant understanding of customer's online behavior, which  gives him/her significant say in formulating the overall business strategy. I am sure that this domain will observe maximum number of entrepreneurial initiatives in recent time.  Still the number of freshers opting for online marketing are not significant.  If I go to a college and give an option to students to choose one of the following career options: "Java Professionals" , "BPO Executive" and  "SEO Executive". What do you think the students will opt for? My guess is, SEO will receive the least number of votes.

Why? Do people really know about the opportunities available in online marketing domain?  Lets have a session discussing the gaps and want can we do to take care of this problem. I think this session will also be valuable for college students and other industry professionals.

Let's share more about it and we will create this session accordingly.

Regards,
Kapil

Hi Kapil,

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. I'm sure this will have an
overall positive impact among freshers, and helps them to understand
more about Internet Marketing Jobs.

Thanks

True.
Infact Kapil, i would also like to add few points that i share with the college students here in South India....
Few questions that i ask them :
Are you willing to work anywhere in India?
Are you not concerned about being associated with "Top 10" IT Companies?
Are you interested in doing analysis?
Are you interested in steady growth and like competing?
Are you good in communication?
Do you want to work in the normal working hours?
Is Salary & Brand the only criteria for deciding your career?

These questions form the basis for the answer.
Till this year, campus interviews was one of the major reason why they didn't have the time to think of other option. Especially last year, from my personal experience, the students from some of the Tier II cities had very good offers...some had two offers in hand....

So for most of them, the above answers were "Negative"...

Why should i work anywhere in India, when i can work mostly in my state or neighboring state.
Most of them had offers from TCS, CTS, Satyam, HCL, Hexaware, MindTree, PCS, WIPRO.

The reason why i am saying this....we would have to also present them that:
Even if you are from Chennai...if you are prepared to work in "Delhi"....Yeah you would surely make a good progress in this career.
From my earlier analysis, i feel NCR region ranks very well in freshers/trainees requirement.
Bangalore was second in the list followed by Mumbai, Pune & Chennai.

as always,
itispals

Dear Kapil, Palani
Thanks for the insight. Most freshers may not even be aware of the oppetunities in search marketing. Much less that this is more exciting and has greater propects than being a " resource" in a team amoungst the Big 5 or now Big 4 ( Satyam excluded )
Working for Wipro you cant start a Wipro. But working for a search company can help you boot strap your own start up. This is could be a USP which will stick well with twenty somethings.
All thing condisdered the student event is sensisble and more than that polically correct. All colleges are indefinitely closed to avoid any student unrest due to the situation in Sri Lanka. Most private and engg colleges should be opened in the next week or two. We can get some posters ready and have them displayed on the campus.
Hope I am in sync with your thoughts.

Some colleges in Tamil Nadu have reopened and this is the right time
to contact them. Also, we don't have anything mentioned in the wiki
about this Careers section that targets students...

Any Volunteers?

Thanks
Ezhil
