I'm running Firefox 22.0 on XP SP3.

I see a "W" to the left of the search box. When I enter text in the search box, that text appears in front of the "W" - up to 4 characters are visible.

After I disable Autosizer, the "W" goes.

Here is a video of the problem:

I kinda know why this is happening.  We use a label with your text plus "W" to measure the required width although I don't know why it is showing as it should be hidden.

Could you try in a fresh profile and see if this problem still occurs.  If that doesn't work could you download the ADIC addon and provide the output?  I feel like it is a conflict with another extension.

Hi Kevin,

No problem with a new profile. I know what you're going to say now...  :)

The thing is, I have 90 extensions installed. So if I were to disable half, check for the problem, and repeat to find the offending/clashing extension, it would take a while and involve a lot of work reconfiguring the extensions.

Did you notice in the video at about time 0:58 that not only was there a "W" present on the menu bar but, as I entered characters in the search box, at least 3 characters come in from the left, and push out the "W".

In fact, if I enter lower case "i" characters, I can see 8 of them altogether as the "W" gets pushed out.

So it looks like that space is some kind of window occupying a fixed space into which my search characters get duplicated.

Does that give you any ideas?

Regards.

Som.

Yup :)

Usually enabling/disabling doesn't mess up your settings.  But I still know what you mean.  I would try disabling some that add items to the toolbar because I think that another addon is making our label visible.

I guess the label is being made a fixed size by something.  Although it shouldn't be visible anyway.

As I said I'm pretty sure it is the label that we use to measure the length in the searchbar.

Yes, but I'm fairly sure it isn't our fault.  I suspect another addon is trying to manipulate something else but is querying the DOM by path and they selected our hidden measuring label by accident.  Then they make it visible and whatever else.

The trick is finding the addon with which SBA clashes.  If you find the addon I would be open to contacting the author in order to fix it but unless we find the source of the problem there isn't much I can do.

Sorry for not really helping,
Kevin

OK, Kevin. I'll give it a go.

I just noticed something. The problem I reported exists on my desktop PC. It does not exist on my laptop PC.
Both Firefox configurations are supposed to be identical - 90 add-ons enabled and configured identically.
I'll check to see if I can find a difference first before disabling them.

OK! Found it - "Classic Compact Options v 16.0.1" by Ken B.

When disabled, the "W" goes and when enabled it comes back. I did that several times. I also checked the configuration was identical to my laptop... and it was.

I removed the extension and went to "about:config" and reset all the "classiccompact" entries.

Then I reinstalled it - "classic_compact-20.0.1-fx.xpi" - and the "W" was not there.

I then re-configured it the way I like (the same as on my laptop) and Searchbar Autosizer still works perfectly.

So I'm not 100% sure how my original Classic Compact screwed up Searchbar Autosizer, but it seems all OK now!

Here's another situation.

I just installed Linux Mint on the laptop and Firefox with all the same extensions as I've mentioned before.

I noticed that the "W" was not present to the right of the searchbar.

Then I realised that I had put the searchbar on the Navigation Bar by mistake.

After I dragged the searchbar onto the Menu Bar, the "W" reappeared.

FYI, when configuring Firefox, I usually drag all the icons and bars off the Navigation Bar and onto the Menu Bar. Then I turn off the Navigation Bar to save vertical space. But today, I accidentally installed all my icons on the Navigation Bar and the "W" was not there. But when I realised my mistake and dragged them onto the Menu Bar, the "W" returned.

The solution was the same as in my previous post - remove the Classic Compact Options extension, set all the remaining entries for it in "about:config" to their reset value, then reinstall the extension and reconfigure it.

The "W" remains absent.
