So Option 2 was approved 6-4 to much our dismay tonight.
In light of this I wanted to say a few things.
It is DOE regulation that anyone in District 2 can request any school regardless of their zoned school. If under option 2 you are now zoned togo to a school that is not your first choice, you have an option. When it is time to apply to Kindergarten, request the school you wanted as your first choice. Eastern Tribca to 234, Gateway to 276, FiDi to Spruce, whatever it is. If everyone who really wants to go to these schools asks for it as their first choice, we could in effect negate the option 2 zoning boundaries! Not everyone will end up where they want, but it will send a message to the DOE and the CEC that they made the wrong decision. There is no reason we should just throw our hands up and accept what the CEC or DOE tells us. Ask, neigh, DEMAND what you want and let our voices be heard again. These are just zoning boundaries, not law to where your children must go!
I am so proud of all of you and am convinced that there were deeper ugly politics and other issues that made this decision go through.
It is now our time to overcome, continue to demand what we want by requesting your first choice school on your applications and now start the fight to keep Spruce Street school a K-8 and pushing the DOE CB#1 and our elected officials to add more middle schools in lower manhattan.
Here is to the future and I hope that our community bond over this issue continues in our collective fight for what is best for ALL of our lower manhattan schools
