Right now I see no problem.

What is the limit of how many people we can have at such a meeting?

Thanks for all you do Jonathan and also making Nomads available.

July 11th is fine, or we can ask on the list for host volunteers. But we should also fix the venue soon so that the speaker and session-facilitator know what they're dealing with. Perhaps we can give 48 hours for offers, and then change the date if nothing else promising comes up.

Message from Kevin.

Panels are intrinsically hard to arrange, because you have to find so many panelists with relevant interests, all available at the same time. This topic may be a bit amorphous for a panel to coalesce easily. If it becomes too difficult to get together, I'd suggest a speaker-cospeaker format.

We need to post on the list soon about changing the date and/or another venue. I think Kevin asked about the number of attendees. If the panel is especially popular we might get 20-25 people, so we'd need room for both them and the panelists. The conference room in Office Nomads gets tight with 20 people. The back rooms in Office Nomads are larger but the projector-screen situation isn't as good.

So, how close are we to a panel? Is it realistic to prepare a panel session in 3 1/2 weeks, when it depends on several panelists and a largish venue? The panelists might want to know where it is before they consent to participate, especially if it's a long commute for them. So I wonder if we should schedule the panel for August to give more time, and do a regular session in Juny.

Mike please forward this to you google group list as I can't get in  it as I am not on the list.

-----

I've already sent several emails to people that posted to the seaPig list  about using these tools to see if they would sit on the panel.

So far no word yet of as it, but it was sent on Friday afternoon so I hope to hear early next week.

I also contacted a person I know inside OpsCode to see if they could send some one and I am waiting to hear back early next week.

I am also going to send an email to Puppet to see if they have any local Tech type people who might be able to sit on the panel.

Ideally I am trying to get 4 to 6 people on the panel that can talk about Fabric, Salt, Chef, Puppet, and what ever else they might use.

Depending on interest level we may want to look for a bigger space if the interest level grows past what we can handle at Nomad's offices.

We can figure that out latter.

I'll know more next week and will email you all then.

Please forward to list

------

Let's see who is willing to join the panel and then will know more of the direction to go.

I am hoping to nail that down on Mon, Tues or Wed of next week.

I am looking for local people so no one needs to commute in.

I already know that Opscode's hard core Python guy is in SF and right now I think this is asking too much of Opscode.

I am sure they have a local person that could do it.

I think a panel in this case makes lots of sense due to the amount of cross over that can happen using these kind of tools.

Plus we could get much more from night if I can the draw the panelist out to talk as we go.

It is a much easier deal for all the panelist as all they need to do is show and talk about what they know

vs prepping samples and code etc.  which very few people like doing.. so few will do something like.  ;-)

What is the max number we can do at Nomad's offices?

As far as a bigger Venue if we need it I have a few ideas, but have not asked any yet.

We just may need to limit on how many can show if have too.

July 11 works for me.

I may be able to get us a contact at OpsCode (Chef).  Do we need one?  If so I'll send some emails.

hi,
The main conference room is limited to about 15 people... however if we
expect a larger crowd we can set up in the space behind the main
conference room. This should allow expansion to 30 or so.

Projection is a problem in the larger space (there is no screen, just a
whiteboard which is not all that white).
But maybe a panel discussion will not need any slides?

I will assume the meeting date is July 11 for now.
I am about to go on vacation (bike touring in Banff/Jasper) and return
on July 6.
I'll have limited email contact while I'm away.
See you all in a few weeks,

Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan.

Kevin: do you have a tentative set of technologies in mind?    I just ran across yet _another_ one of these devops-y tools, and it's written in Python.  It looks interesting, so if you need/want another seat at the table, I could probably hack up a little demo of this for the meeting.  It looks like an interesting middle ground between the heavier Chef/Puppet tools and the completely imperative Fabric.

Re Google Fremont, we did have a Google-sponsored meeting there once. I don't know if it's available now. I think there are some SeaPIGgies from Google but I don't know who. Interestingly, SeaPIG used to meet in that building before Google was there. One of SeaPIG's founders (Adam Feuer) worked for a startup there.

Okay sounds like we go with Office Nomad then.

Philip Kimmey who has rover.com ----- a cool startup thing for dogs........  http://www.rover.com/

Has offered to provide Pizza + drinks  if we allow him to get up and do a simple recruit pitch.

He is a Django based startup

So I suggested maybe we do a small discussion about his operation to give others some insight about what they are doing wit Python etc.

Me personally I find this as an important way to spread the word around about how Python is being used to build startup companies etc..

Seriously pretty much most of the Python world lacks in this basic marketing area and it's why PHP and Ruby kicks our butt sometimes.

I told him yes to offer, as I don't see it as a conflict

Besides he thought 5 minutes or less was more than plenty of time.

I think the more we can get folks talking about how they used Python to build companies....... the better.

Plus if he willing to spend between $100 to 150 dollars to get word out to find a Python geek to work for him.

I see this as a win - win.

For all and I hope you do as well.

I know based on other groups I've gone to over the years.

The minute you add pizza in the mix

it seems to bring people to meeting that they might otherwise have blown off.

Not sure why... guess people enjoy food and geek meetings.  ;-)

Interesting as Adam has agreed to be on the panel and I didn't realize he was one of the founders.... very cool.  ;-)

Hmmm... yes, I think this meeting might shape up to really a fun one.

It's a hot topic,

we have food + drink to bring folks in

Should be a nice summer night to goof off on.

The Django Seattle group is coming over to hang out with us all.

We have one of founders of SeaPig on the Panel as well as James. Yeah!!!!!!!

Plus a good cross selection of others users working with Salt + Chef + a bit of Puppet

I still would like to add one more person doing Puppet.

And still really need a Fabric person

Looks like we will have an engineer from Opscode ( chef ) there.. still waiting for finally yes today ( friday )

And I am still waiting to hear back from PuppetLabs to see if they can send someone.

What do you think about if I set up an Eventbright ticket page?

It's free to use, but this way I could get folks to RSVP.

This way we get a head count for food

And get people to commit for the event vs just hoping someone will show.

Okay sorry it was so long here.  :-)

But let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Looks like this is all falling into place fro a fun meeting.

-Kevin
