I’ve been thinking about this, my apologies, in regards to another cultural battle: the Barbie discourse, which is thankfully petering out. (A kindness of my cat to pass on the same day I saw the movie, thus saving me from weighing in.) One thing I will say about it, though, is that my least favorite argument in favor of the movie is the suggestion that its commercial success somehow justified its existence. There was the argument that Greta Gerwig’s career ambitions were more important than her not shilling for a corporation looking to clean up its spotty reputation and increase shareholder value; or that one “has to respect” Margot Robbie for making $50M dollars on the project; or that it’s politically important, in an ambient kind of way, that a movie made “for women” was such a box-office success. I think of these kinds of arguments as falling in the camp of “can’t knock the hustle,” one of America’s favorite sentiments, stolen from a Jay-Z song about selling drugs to escape poverty and reappropriated as a defense of basically anyone doing whatever they want to get ahead.
It occurred to me, reading the wave of Drew Barrymore criticism, how absurd it would be for someone to defend her by saying, “Can’t knock the hustle!”—which is nice. It’s satisfying that the logic of a strike lays bare the flaw in applying that notion at scale. To argue against the strike because it hinders someone’s hustle is to misunderstand the point of a strike: It’s supposed to hurt pockets, to cause inconvenience, to halt the flow of business—not just for the powers that be, but for everyone involved. The more pressure applied to the system, the more likely the system will have to change. This requires a lot of sacrifice from everyone involved, which is why strikers deserve our support and respect.

Amazed, I read it. Decent, but it needed more intrigue, so I kept adjusting the prompt until I got a story about a baby bear named Benny who encounters several of his forest friends bewildered by a smashed piggy bank in the magical woods. He then learns all about income inequality from his friend Elizabeth Raven, and together they set out to right all economic injustice. Damn, I smell a Newbery Medal.
Happy Friday, friends! If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen my January project #AnnsDailyLetters. I've been lettering a motivational mantra a day, and today I wanted to share one of my favorites as a iPhone wallpaper.
Inspired by some stickers at my favorite party house, I thought you could use a pocket reminder to keep your hustle game strong.
Also, I've decided to start this new section, Fancy Free, for free download-ables like iPhone, iPad, and desktop wallpapers and calendars. Woohoo!

But back to the soup: By cutting out the process of having to cook down the squash when you use baby purees, in less than thirty minutes you can have a butternut squash soup that could be served in a 5 star restaurant.
There's another tot-sized surprise guest in the mix, too. "That's actually Jeremy Renner's baby," he says, pointing to a shot in which Renner, in politico mode, cradles a constituent's month-old infant.
How did that happen? "They brought the baby and they were hanging around with (Renner's) mother," says Russell. "I couldn't get his mother to be in the scene. But I said, 'Why don't you put the baby in the scene right now?' "
As a working mom, taking on a side hustle might sound crazy, but there are seasons to embark on new adventures and others that require observance of simple tasks. Currently, I serve part-time as the Education Director for an art gallery in Brooklyn and run a small floral design business on the side. In a creative industry that often makes us feel like we are never doing enough, I have found that all a side hustle needs to be is a small seed sown.
A side business, while creatively invigorating can also grow weeds of depletion if not careful. The tendency to fill every free weekend with weddings and events is often tempting. However, we all know from the slow blooming nature of flowers, that growth occurs in due season. A year ago, having just had a baby, my sleep deprived self would not have felt ready to do much more than take care of my blossoming son. I knew it was time to pursue the hustle when the sleep deprivation hailed from the stirring of my imagination rather than my ever-waking baby.
Joy is a huge part of what makes this side hustle sustainable. What is of higher value than the money I bring home from a wedding, is the joy that overflows into my home, husband, and son. The satisfaction of my clients and my own fullness of heart let me know that this side hustle is more than just a hobby, it is a way to point to the mysteries and intricate designs of nature beyond what human hands can make.
If you're a fellow working mom reading this and wondering if you should take the next step towards pursuing your passion, I encourage you to start with a side hustle. Listen to those things that are giving you joy. Rather than making room in your life for your vision, you might be surprised that it will make room for you.
She relocated to Los Angeles following her stardom success and set up Coffee and Plants in Pasadena three years ago. The star has since expanded her booming side hustle, opening another site in the Studio City neighbourhood.
The crowning achievement thus far has been a single viral TikTok video that generated over 2 million views. Combined with a "The 9 Best Kindle Accessories to Shop on Amazon Under $35" PR roundup Cosmopolitan published, including Strapsicle, the widespread exposure pushed Lou's side hustle over $100k in sales in its first month, topping six figures.
Thank you for this post. When I was on maternity leave with my first baby, I felt very isolated and lost a lot of ground at work. It's refreshing to read about a positive maternity leave experience and get me thinking about how I can make the leave actually help my professional life.
I'm surprised to read such aggressive comments above. This blog post was entirely positive and included no hint of judgment about being a career mother versus staying at home. Given the cost of living in this area, there must be many families who don't have a choice regarding going back to paid jobs after maternity leave.
There is no shortage of wonderful SAHM blogs out there (many of which I read), in contrast I have seen few blogs by mothers who work outside the home. It's so helpful to hear about how others juggling a career and trying to be good parents make it all fit. Thanks!!
So where is my focus, other than on how inefficient I feel at work these days? Without a doubt, my attention and energy centre on my son's proper care and development. But the rest of my focus is splattered like baby food on the ceiling.
With a multitude of ongoing lab projects and papers that, to my impatient self, advance as if through thickest jelly, I need to regroup, buckle down and hustle. Otherwise, my focus will be on what I want to do rather than on my actual successes and what I can reasonably achieve.
