Just heard/saw it here in the States. Anyone else seen it yet? I
wonder how this affects the band royalty/licensing-wise. They've got
to be seeing some checks coming in... I hope.

Sorry...should clarify that it was a female vocalist....online
searches say it's by Shiny Toy Guns (maybe)

Looks like it is in fact Shiny Toy Guns as they have done other recent
commercials for Lincoln including a cover of Major Tom. Those are available
on Lincoln's website. However, the UTMW one is available here:

Poor ole SK. What must he think when this sometimes-albatross is now used to
market a giant 7-person luxury SUV? Maybe a new opportunity for a Time Being
blog-rant. Here's hoping!

Yep, saw it here in FL, USA last night. Hope the band is getting *something* out of it. Read some discussion on the web about it and someone said the cover was done by an artist called SIA (or sia-?). Here's the artists site...

...and the commercial...

cropping up
since Donnie Darko, way to go boys, moolah? at least some....

I still wish UTMW made it to a "Milky Way bar" commercial....

That wasn't Shiny Toy Guns doing "Major Tom" (which is actually DB's "SPACE ODDESSY") ;)  That was a female singer known as "Cat Power".  It sounds really great actually.  I think she did a good rendition of it.

Huh. Are we looking at different things? Lincoln's site says Shiny Toy Guns. Not that I would know!

Go here:

and click on the second one and when it plays it says:

"LUXURY AT LIGHTSPEED"
2010 Lincoln MKZ

"Major Tom (Coming Home)"
Performed by Shiny Toy Guns, available on itunes

Ha!  D'oh!!  I guess so.  You're absolutely right.  Yes, THAT one is a great one too.  I think I like the original Peter Schilling.  I thought you were referring to this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_JGDO3X87g

BTW- It is Space Oddity (not Oddessy!!)  Whoops!

Hey, those are both great songs though, right?

So it is Sia doing the version in the Lincoln ad?  While I don't hate it (it's a lovely song and it takes a LOT to completely ruin it), I find the vocals a bit too nasal for my taste.  But I won't search it out to listen to, so that's not really a problem. I am thrilled there will be royalties and people searching for the song (any version) because of this ad.

i see the trend in tv ads lately more for covers of the originals,
makes the songs sort of modern????

especially for timeless tracks like UTMW....

good exposure for the band, especially 21 years after the song broke..

Actually, it's probably because it's less expensive to hire someone to
cover a song than it is to license the original recorded version.

This is true. The Church should get the song writing/publishing
royalties for the song usage (known as a synchronization fee).
However, Lincoln won't have to pay them for the master recording in
this case (mechanical usage). They may have cut a deal paying a flat
fee to the artist to record the song. Usually cheaper than a
mechanical license.

Not much of a video, there. Just the lyrics popping up.

Best to just go to http://www.lincoln.com/extras/tvads.asp, click on the MKT ad, then in the pop-up, click "download song." It's a 192 kbps mp3, 3 min. 35 sec. long, which feels about 3 min. too long to me. The 30 sec. commercial got it right (and I like Sia).

Been a bit quiet around here lately.

Fantastic night/set/venue/gig last Saturday in Fremantle

Ricky posted set list on HW as follows:

Providence
Didn't Know Where I Was
The Neverness Hoax
Comedown
Ancient World
Life's Little Luxuries
Thought That I Was Over You
Lowboy
Wolfe
Nothing Inside
Limbo
Don't Look Back
Ramble
Buffalo
Under The Milky Way
The Unguarded Moment
Lonely Stretch

I loved Providence and Comedown, thought that I was over you was a treat,
too many highlights to mention.

I managed to catch 4 in poor quality video on a crappy old Nokia but sound
is clear - enough to get the idea

thought that I was over you - complete
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4X2klF40dM

Nothing Inside - complete
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvHSpIBD9Vs

Under The Milky Way - complete with about 4 mins stage banter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjZFrBNY64g

Unguarded Moment - almost complete, phone actually ran out of memory just
before the end
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edC5hEiooXA

these are the only ones I filmed (basically completely random selections)
but there was a camera at the back recording the whole show and the folks
behind the merchandise table said maybe it might see the light of day some
time.

enjoy

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting the setlist. I was there last Saturday night and it was simply awesome. One of those brilliant gigs that stay with you long after the show.

Steve and Ricky were in fine form with the usual banter you can expect from Steve. Heckling the hecklers... there was some truly gloriously funny laugh-out-loud moments :-)

I picked up some treats from the Merch stand. Steve Kilbey live DVD for $20 & signed limited SK art print for $50 (18/21).

This show has really whet my appetite for the upcoming Church shows at The Quarry.

- Damian.
