Subject: Fwd: CEA report on units older than 25 years

CEA report on units older than 25 years-I: 48,547 MW of capacity in this category

: The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has prepared a report studying the performance of the thermal units older than 25 years. The Apex Authority has noted that of the 2,53,390 MW total installed capacity, 48,547 MW was commissioned before 1989, that implies it has been operating for more than 25 years.
8According to the report, there are 194 units of 55 coal or lignite based stations generating 29,503 MW which are older than 25 years.
8The report has further observed that the average Plant Load Factor (PLF) of thermal stations was 65.55% at national level in 2013-14, of which 14,520 MW coal/lignite based capacity is below the national average PLF in FY14.
8As per the report, during FY14, nearly 34.5% i.e. 10,183 MW capacity have registered 80% PLF, while 16.3% capacity performed between 65-85% PLF, which was above the national average PLF of FY14.
8Meanwhile, units in the state sector accounting to 17.5% i.e 5165 MW capacity, performed between 50-65% PLF. The performance of these unit, however, can be improved with better operation and maintenance practices, noted CEA.
8Additionally, only 7.3% capacity amounting to 2157 MW was recorded with PLF between 40-50%, while 19.4% capacity, 5729 MW performed below 40%.

CEA report on units older than 25 years-II: Recommends retirement of 2,314 MW of capacity

In a study conducted by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) on units older than 25 years, it recommended 2,314 MW capacity for retirement based on consistently performing below 40% PLF.
8As per the report, 22 units in the state sector while 5 units in the public sector together amounted for 2,314 MW capacity as on 31st March, 2014.
8Meanwhile, the study segregated 50 units of capacity 5729 MW which performed below 40% and were studied further and their PLF was complied for the last three years and the current year 2014-15 (upto July).
8Of the 5729 MW capacity, 2,314 MW capacity were proposed for decommissioning due to consistently performing below 40% PLF for the period under consideration.
