Asia Pacific Updates 2014
Dear Imam Musthofa,
Happy 2014! My best wishes for the New Year.
A lot of exciting developments have occurred in the last 3 months as we wrapped up 2013.
On the fisheries front, we have witnessed great progress:
- Australian fisheries had the opportunity to engage the key buyers and chefs from major retailers, restaurants and hotels during the Sustainable Seafood Business Forum in Singapore on 28 October.
- The world’s largest tuna fishery, the PNA skipjack tuna free school purse seine fishery, delivered the first MSC labelled skipjack tuna from the Pacific into Europe in November 2013. Austrian company , SPAR, are leading the way being
the first retailer to offer the completely traceable skipjack tuna from the Central and Western Pacific oceans where the MSC certified sustainable Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) skipjack fishery operates.
- Global seafood markets can continue to source MSC certified Alaska salmon and apply the MSC ecolabel, after a scientific, stakeholder-engaged, third-party assessment by Intertek Moody Marine (IMM) determined that 13 units of certification
meet the MSC Standard as a sustainable and well-managed fishery.
- The Russian Sea of Okhotsk walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) fishery has proven their target stocks are healthy, their impact on the marine ecosystem is reduced and they have effective management systems in place. MSC certification.
The fishery operates throughout the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk and commercial fishing occurs during two seasons: January to April, and October to December. In 2012, the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) was approximately 840,000 MT.
The MSC also launched some initiatives to communicate the science behind our program:
- Sustainable Seafood Forum was held in Dalian, China on 4th November in partnership with CAPPMA. The event drew the interest of over 200 participants, and provided MSC the opportunity to introduce and engage the audience
about the MSC program.
- Results of the latest round of independent DNA testing on MSC labelled products show over 99% were correctly labelled. Of 320 samples tested, only three were found to be mislabelled. Independent DNA testing on MSC-labelled products
is an integral part of the MSC’s strategy for demonstrating and monitoring the rigorousness and effectiveness of our chain of custody program.
- Accessing the science behind MSC has never been easier. Our new online fisheries science research library, MSC Science Series, will provide open access to the science that underpins the MSC standards. The series will present the latest
research on issues relating to fishery resources, marine habitats, ecosystems and other key topics.
- Teaming up with Skype in the classroom, a free global network of 71,000 teachers from 235 countries and territories, the MSC delivered lessons throughout November covering six key themes; from Habitats and Ecosystems to Sustainability
and the Future of our Oceans to schools around the world.
In this brand new year, the MSC Asia Pacific team will continue our efforts to engage all our stakeholders in the region to transform the seafood market. As we usher in the Lunar New Year, I would like to wish all of you
Gong Xi Fa Cai, Nian Nian You Yu (恭喜发财,年年有鱼【余】).

Taiki joined our MSC Japan office as Senior Commercial Manager in October 2013. It’s been a really interesting couple of months for him. “I am very excited to be part of the MSC and to promote the ecolabel in the Japanese market. Sustainable seafood is a topic
very close to my heart, and I hope to use my extensive experience in retail and food business to transform the market in Japan. I look forward to help businesses embark on their own sustainability journey.”
