Hello my dear friends and family,

Yes you guessed right, yours truly will be performing at Carnegie Hall in 2 weeks! Yes I am extremely thrilled and excited.  Yes, this is NOT a spoof, spam, or a phishing email.  And Yes, I did give a few of you the heads up that this email was coming. J   I hope you can come watch my performance and even more hopeful is that you would be a donor in support of the music programs in NYC.

Tickets for the performance can be purchased at the Carnegie Hall box office or click here to purchase tickets online to the 2017 NY Sounds of Summer International Music Festival.

As some of you may know, when I am not in the office, I fill my time with my sports and hobbies which are associated with various non-profit organizations.  One of my pride and joy hobby is being a flutist in the Grand Street Community Band (GSCB), sister band to the Brooklyn Wind Symphony (BKWS).  GSCB is a volunteer-based ensemble comprised of professionals from all industries with only one targeted goal, to make beautiful music in a friendly environment. We held our debut performance at Carnegie Hall in 2015.  A performance I thought would be a once in a lifetime opportunity and never thought we would have the pleasure to recreate such an amazing memory.  Phrew! I am glad I am wrong on that forecast.

Under the conducting directions of Brian Worsdale, GSCB has thrived in each and every one of our performances, gaining the attention from a variety of conductors and composers.  We have performed so well in the last 2 years that we have been invited to be the featured band for the 2017 New York Sounds of Summer International Music Festival held at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, June 13.

I started playing the flute when I was 8, held the position of first/second chair throughout middle school and high school in the concert band, the orchestra, and the marching band.  Yes, I would be in the jazz band too if only the conductor would take a flutist.  J  Music enveloped a great deal of my life growing up.  It was dearly missed as I stepped into my college years and into my career.  There are many quartets and duet ensembles in NYC, however, playing in an quartet/duet is very different than playing in a band, too many missing parts. I feel extremely lucky and blessed to have been introduced to Jeff Ball, creator and founder of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony and the Grand Street Community Band and became one of their founding members.

MY FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN FOR GSCB: To bring 100 NYC public school music students to experience Carnegie Hall – Cost: $3,000

Our band is living proof to music students that music does not have to leave their lives after high school.   As such, I would like to have your help and sponsorship to bring 100 NYC public school music students to our performance at Carnegie Hall.  Due to cost and limitation in classrooms, music programs are offered at only a handful of public schools.  Most NYC music students do not own their own instruments as their families cannot afford them.  Without your sponsorship, many NYC music students would not have the means to afford a ticket to experience a concert at Carnegie Hall.  Your sponsorship provides these students with a life lasting first impression and fond memory of their first concert experience at Carnegie Hall.

Each Carnegie Hall ticket costs $30.  If each of you could sponsor 5 students to the concert, we would be making 100 life lasting memories.

Please help me and support music in NYC by making your donation in the form of a check payable to “The Metropolitan Music Community,” the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that houses the Grand Street Community Band and our sister bands, the Brooklyn Wind Symphony and the Kings County Concert Band.

Please contact me if you are interested in making a donation to help preserve the spirits of music in NYC students. Call me or text me any time. J

Cheers!

Lavina

Note on Metropolitan Music Community (MMC) & Grand Street Community Band (GSCB):

Metropolitan Music Community (MMC) is a NYS non-profit organization created by the founding members of the Brooklyn Wind Symphony.  The Brooklyn Wind Symphony (BKWS) was established and founded by Jeff W. Ball in 2008.  BKWS was originally called the Grand Street Community Band. The band changed its name from the Grand Street Community Band to Brooklyn Wind Symphony when it received its accredited symphony status from the music community in 2011.  By 2012, the band has grown so much in size that it could no longer fit all musicians on stage, hence the creation of a second symphony which took on the name of the Grand Street Community Band. If you would like to learn more about GSCB, BKWS or MMC, feel free to browse the band’s website at http://metropolitanmusiccommunity.org/gscb/.
