Hi Everyone,
Having followed what is said so far about Seadogs being unable to tack etc.. Don't forget that the Seadog was designed as a Motorsailer and as such if you wish to sail to windward you require the engine to be on tick over or maybe more and then everything is possible. In the form that she was designed for the boat will not sail well to windward because the 'J' angle is to small. (Angle formed at the top of the mast to it's base and the top of the mast to the bows which is controlled by the length of the base of the mast to the bow of the boat) To make this boat sail without a motor the 'J' angle must be increased and that is why a bowsprit is necessary. The optimum length being four feet from the bows to the end of the sprit. Those of us who have had a sprit added can now sail as a sailing boat but to get the best performance they must be balanced and tuned as described in the following document which I wrote some twenty years ago on this subject. If you wish to print it, it's 8 pages long of A4. When your boat is tuned you will have a very fast sailing ketch and quite able to sail efficiently to windward and all other points of sailing.
A number of ex Seadog'ers have bought a Nab35 which is really the minimum size for an efficient sailing ketch. To make a Seadog sail without a bowsprit the Mainmast would have to be moved further aft and then of course it would not be supported by a bulkhead and the sail area would be reduced in size and the boat would be out of balance.
Kind regards
Brian
