Good evening all,

This weeks job is to refit the fuel tanks and it is, even it is a dry fit for now as work beckons next week.

Do anyone have a definitive answer on what to do about the deck drains on the port side of the boat?
Currently i have 25mm water hose stretched over the fittings on both the deck funnels and the box on the hull. There is no longer have a gas locker as it isn't needed and there is a day tank in that place now. I seem to remember someone talking briefly about these on the winter rally, but cannot remember the details of the fix.
I don't envision ever having access to this area again. :-).

Many thanks
Martin..

Hi Martin,
We failed to check and repair those drains in 2006 when the engine was replaced and have regretted it ever since. I had mistakenly assumed that the water in the deep bulge was from engine cooling or water tanks and these were both thoroughly checked. Pretty sure we still have leaks through the port side deck drains, especially in heavy seas, but also some rainwater.
If you get to the bottom of it please let us all know, with photographs if possible. I have considered blocking the drains and fitting scuppers in the area below the toe rail but haven't done anything about it.

Hi Martin,

Tackling them at the moment as well – not sure this is the best answer, but I have epoxied up any cracking (they were pretty old [Tarry1968]) and then put seacocks on them, as notice they are waterline (sitting a bit lower than perhaps she once did?). Made a small access hatch from stern cabin, as there is a hole there where hose comes through anyway, so just made a bit bigger to fit a hand and a bit of visibility for checks. Will put a small hatch on it so can be closed up. If you are interested can send photos as hopefully down at the boat soon.

Best Regards

John

Thank you all for the replies.

The waterline on new wanderer seems to have risen too over the years meaning the outlets are slightly below the waterline too.
Some of the leaks i have so far discovered have been caused by the grate screws that go right through the deck funnel and out to the inside of the boat allowing water to leak in to the bilge.

John it sounds like every Seadog is different,  the access i have is through the back of the cockpit locker, but it is still very awkward to gain access.

Definitely will tackle these before moving on with the tanks, just not sure yet what to do,  will keep you posted.

Best wishes
Martin..

As discussed, attached images of port side deck drains from inside engine compartment. Access to seacocks is through the cupboard in the aft cabin - so does involve lying flat with your head half in a door... All still needs tidying, but idea is clear.

Best Regards

John

Hello John,

Thank you John for posting the photos, very different to the set up here.
Curious to know the sizing and are they thru hulls mounted on the deck?

Best wishes
Martin..

Heya guys,

It was Paul who talked about the deck drains at the rally this year, it was in his presentation with all his inventions and improvements. He had a handout, I'll attach the pics, there's less info on the handout than he spoke about though.
He doesn't have the Facebook group or anything so I got his email on the back, see pic.

I seem to remember him saying the hose connectors into the grp box bit were originally copper pipe or something, I think I'm correct in saying that.. the main jist was they're always a point of failure along with the box to the hull.
He outlines his fix in the pic of the handout.

Two tails before we pulled her out for the winter was taking on huge amounts of water! We had loads of heavy rain but I was also convinced the amount wasn't just rain.
I'm pretty convinced it was all fresh water and I didn't have the doghouse up and neither the engine bay hatched tightened down so with it being super heavy rain I'm sure some was coming in there.

However I'm pretty convinced the Deck drain fittings are leaking along with the box at the through hull and then when she sits deeper she starts taking on water in through the through hull along with the whole decks rain catchment.

Before we go back in soon I'm going to plug and glass over the whole system and put scuppers through a few of the lowest areas, I believe this will be easier than re glassing and fixing new hose and connectors with the limited access and eliminates multiple leak points!
I plan to just glass some grp profile tube through the toe rail, slightly lower than deck and on a shallow angle.. it'll put more water over the rub rail is the only negative I can see. Depending on how she sitting the current deck drains don't do the best job of draining all the water either so that'll be another benefit.

You can get cheap meter lengths of 38mm and 44mm dia grp tube from gas outlets as sheathing

Cheers

Pete
