Hi everyone

I just wanted to keep you all abreast of whats going on.

We've gotten support from the World Seabird Union Transition Team to
begin working on the website (to take control of the static content
from Axiom). We are currently in the process of moving the website
over to a new host (www.bluehost.com).

In that regards, Axiom will still be working on the Applications to
access the databases, seabirds.net will link into these
applications.

I would like to discuss how SEABIRDS.NET will link to the WORLD
SEABIRD UNION. My personal feeling is that the WSU website itself
with information about WSU and such should be a subdirectory of
Seabirds.net, with the main page of seabirds.net acting as a
directional page (pointing to the various apps and linking to other
seabird group websites).

My Question that I'm posing to all of you is this:

HOW DO YOU SEE THE WORLD SEABIRD UNION LINKING TO SEABIRDS.NET??
(I.E. SHOULD SEABIRDS.NET ACT AS THE WORLD SEABIRD UNION'S MAIN PAGE?
OR DO YOU THINK WORLD SEABIRD UNION WEBPAGE SHOULD LAY AS A
SUBDIRECTORY OF SEABIRDS.NET?? <- WWW.SEABIRDS.NET/WSU)

I look forward to your responses.

Cheers
Grant H

Hi All,

I'll paste here my response to Grant's question (which I sent to him and a few others by way of a private message).  Hope I've got the system down for this discussion group.

Cheers,

Scott

I think the main label (re world-wide-web) that we want to lodge in everyone's mind is, from now on, Seabirds.net.  Therefore, WSU-related content, like everything else, should be accessed from Seabirds.net.  It should be noted prominently on the home page that the WSU owns and manages Seabirds.net on behalf of seabird personnel worldwide.  Whatever content the WSU may generate relative to its range of activities (including or apart from Seabirds.net itself) should be contained under its organizational node on Seabirds.net.  In other words, I think it would be self-defeating to create, say, and independent website for the WSU with a link to Seabirds.net from there.  The WSU sponsors Seabirds.net, and should therefore use it to promote one-stop web access to anything/everything pertaining to seabirds on the web, including its own organizational presence on the web.

Hi again,

Just to amplify on my previous remarks...

It's important to realize that while Seabirds.net is intended to be comprehensive with respect to world seabird information (in principle initially, and over time, in reality), the WSU, as one professional organization (albeit a "super-organization"), probably can never be regarded as  representing all seabird interests, now or in the future.  Therefore the logical arrangement is for the the website Seabirds.net to be the top-level node--generic and all-inclusive--and for the organization that manages it to nest and account for itself from within Seabirds.net.

Cheers,

Scott

Hey Scott,

Looks like you've got the forum figured out pretty well.

I agree with you - that was how I envisioned things as well. I see a
www.seabirds.net/wsu which would contain all information pertinent to
the activities of WSU, while seabirds.net as a whole is managed by WSU
(the website coordinator - currently Annette).

Cheers
Grant
