I wonder if it could be an idea to put some effort into making the
webpage supplement the world seabird conference when that goes ahead.
Although it's obviously in the distant future, and it's hardly a
radical idea, but I was thinking that seabirds.net somehow could
supplement the conference itself.

There is no replacement for meeting people face to face, but for the
people that are not able to attend, it could be a good alternative if
they could pay a small fee for "online conference" access, listen to
keynote speakers, get the poster uploaded pdfs etc. Also for people at
the conference who may have to miss certain talks it could be nice to
be able to watch online. Obviously this would require a significant
media team and probably investment beyond the current webpage's
resources. But does anybody like this overall idea?

I don't really have much experience with conferences, but would be
surprised if nobody's done this before?

I think this is a good idea! Of course, it's a long while away, but maybe something we can look into. There would have to be a media team for this. I guess we'll get around to it.

Cheers!

I agree, I think it's a really good idea, especially for such an international group.  I participated in a conference where they posted the slides of presenters on the web, so this may be another way to go if video ends up being logistically challenging or cost-prohibitive...or a mix of both might work...maybe video for plenaries and pdfs for contributed talks?

Cheers,
Michelle

One cool integration would be to encourage the uploading of all the
posters to a site like this one http://www.qrate.me/. The idea is that
every poster gets a small QR code, which would allow for anyone with a
smartphone to save the poster for later, or potentially rate it in a
poster competition.

This is an area that is growing rapidly ... there are some conference specific apps that let the whole conference be run through peoples phones ... with programmes and schedules etc being delivered through the app. Something for the organisers to look at when the time comes.

In terms of seabirds.net we are probably best integrating with someone elses solution, rather than rolling our own.

One to watch when the time comes.

Could definitely make all posters and presentations available through the site though ... and video as well.

Cheers,

Ed.
