This query really depends on which main purpose seabirds.net has. My
impression is that it will mainly be an academic forum, which
enthusiasts and non-professionals may coincidently find interesting.
If that is the case, my idea may not be that useful.

I think an expandable species tree with all seabirds would be a neat
and non-threatening introduction to seabird research. I presume not
many here are phylogeneticists, but am sure we could make it work,
even if it wasn't completely accurate, it would be a good tool for
navigating the seabirds that are being worked on. When the database is
up and running, it should be relatively easy to link the species tree
navigation with the database, so that users could see what data is
available for their species or family of interest.

Maybe it's too optimistic to expect someone to be willing to write and
update fact sheets on all the bird species, but for the purpose of
general info, i think linking to birdlife would be ideal.

So basically a menu at the top or on a side bar saying "Species" or
"Seabirds", where an expandable tree will take you to a species, group
or family of interest.

It depends on what kind of visitors the website expects and wants to
get. Do you think a species menu like that would be intuitive to use?
I'm just not a very big fan of long lists of species like this one
(although i've seen much longer ones): http://www.seabirds.net/asis.php

This is also a good idea Sjurour. We would need to think about this option alot (on the technical side). But I could see it being a good way to explore seabirds, with a focus on phylogenetic relationships as we understand them.
Lets put that on the "backburner" for now I think, and we'll develop that more once we are further along.  I really like it though

Cheers
