Call-in Day for the kids at Marsh Fork Today - Wednesday, April 26th
Since last Spring, Coal River Mountain Watch and Mountain Justice Summer
have organized thousands in expressing their discontent with the situation
at Marsh Fork Elementary School and in calling for a safe place to learn for
the children of the Coal River Valley. Through education and outreach,
letter-writing, civil disobedience and countless other efforts we have
sustained pressure on Governor Joe Manchin to do the right thing. In July of
last year, directly responding to a sit-in on the capitol steps staged by Ed
Wiley, a grandfather of a Marsh Fork student, various state officials agreed
to meet with Coal River Mountain Watch and other community members to
discuss their concerns. Shortly thereafter the permit for a second coal silo
to be constructed behind the school was revoked. We are making progress! But
we can only win with your support!
*Join us in calling Governor Manchin TODAY and tell him to build the
students of Marsh Fork Elementary a safe place to learn in their community.

*Talking points:*
1.) Build the kids of Marsh Fork Elementary a new school IN THEIR OWN
COMMUNITY. Please get the kids out of there immediately but please do not
ship them out of the valley on a school bus for an hour or more to attend a
school outside their community. (it is particularly important to emphasize
that the governor *build* a new school *in their community*, and that folks
avoid the word 'move.')
2.) We do not need any more tests to know that coal dust is not safe for
children or that the school is riddled with coal dust, we need to build the
kids a new school within their own community. When children's feet turn
dark from coal dust after running through the school yard, this is evidence
enough!
3.) The "air quality" tests conducted by the school board last year were a
sham; please build the kids of Marsh Fork Elementary a new school in their
own community. Bill Elswick (from the Dept. of Education), who conducted the
tests, admitted that he is NOT an air quality specialist (he specializes in
heating and ventilation systems) and that NO test for coal dust or ANY
hazardous chemical was conducted. Without these tests this "air quality"
evaluation can not determine if the air is safe for children to breathe;
it's not worth the paper it is written on.
4.) It is unsafe and grossly irresponsible to have a sludge dam perched 400
yards above an elementary school which is one of the reasons why we need you
to build a new school for the kids of Marsh Fork Elementary -in their own
community. The sludge dam above the school has the capacity to hold up to
2.8 billion gallons of toxic sludge. An MSHA inspector has reported that if
the dam were to fail that fatalities would almost certainly occur. According
to the MSHA documents obtained through the freedom of information act the
dam is "seeping" in widespread areas, at the embankment and at the toe.
*Build a new school in the community for the kids at Marsh Fork Elementary
immediately as this situation is unsafe and grossly irresponsible.
*
*** Please remember to be polite ( I am sure you will!) and to go ahead and
express yourself, this is important so don't rush what you have to say,
these kids are important and it's just as important the Governor get the
message.
