A bill was recently passed by the Tennessee Intercollegiate State
Legislature that would ban all strip mining in Tennessee. This bill is going
before Governor Bredesen and then the state legislature to possibly become
law. We all need to let our representatives know that we want this law
passed. Strip mining for coal destroys the land, ecosystem, water sources
and surrounding communities just so we can have cheap electricity. Rural
appalachian communities have sacrificed their homes and their lives to
satisfy our appetite for electricity for too long. It is up to all of us to
say stop this now! We have to let our government know that we don't want
people killed, the environment destroyed and our drinking water sources
buried for electricity, especially when there are alternatives available.
