In case any of you are interested in learning more about labor organizing.  There will also be unions there with potential job opportunities.  Travel is not covered but accommodations are.  If these dates don't work for you, there will also be another organizing institute in Orange County, CA in August.

Email Diana Bui at db...@apalanet.org with any questions!

"It's boot camp for social change. The three days will challenge you physically, mentally, and emotionally…in the end, you're rebuilt only stronger." - Will Nguyen  (2008 APALA OI Participant)

Organizing Institute (OI) runs a highly selective, paid training and placement program to match talented individuals, from a variety of backgrounds who want to be union organizers, with unions looking to expand their organizing programs. One of the strengths of the APALA OI is that participants are trained by some of the most seasoned APA organizers from across the country.  This training has become the single most effective method to identify, train, and grow the number of qualified APA organizers around the country.

APALA Organizing Institute trainers understand and incorporate the specific characteristics and needs of the APA community into the training.  The unique training creates a support system for APA union members and provides the technical tools, resources, and mentorship to train more effective organizers.

Who Should Attend the APALA OI?

1. APA union members who are interested in refining organizing skills

2. APA young worker and graduating college students who are interested in organizing and joining the labor movement

3. Union organizers who work closely with high concentrations of APA workers

Responsibilities of a Union Organizer

A union organizer assists workers in gaining union representation. An organizer informs workers (mostly nonunion workers) about their rights, identifies and develops leadership skills and runs campaigns for union recognition.

Qualifications

You must be energetic and committed to building the union movement, possess solid communications and leadership skills, be able to travel extensively and relocate and have a valid driver's license. Union, student or community organizing experience is preferred. People of color, women and bilingual individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.
