The Asian American Justice Center (AAJC), a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, works to advance the human and civil rights of Asian Americans and build a promote a fair and equitable society for all. Based in Washington, D.C., AAJC is one of the nation’s leading experts on issues of importance to the Asian American community, including affirmative action, anti-Asian violence prevention/race relations, census, immigration and immigrant rights, telecommunications and broadband diversity and voting rights. AAJC advances its mission through advocacy, public policy, litigation, and community education and outreach.
The AAJC summer clerkship program is a competitive program that recruits law
and undergraduate students. Undergraduate and law clerks work together
with staff attorneys, an arrangement that fosters leadership, management
skills, peer learning, and organizational behavior learning. Although the law
clerks and undergraduate clerks all interact with staff attorneys on a daily
basis, the law clerk is expected to help mentor and manage the work of the
undergraduate clerk. This provides the law clerk with the invaluable experience
of working with individuals with less experience in law and policy and provides
the undergraduate clerk with the experience of critical legal reasoning and a
foundation in legal and policy research.
In addition to completing an in-depth, substantive project
in one practice area, clerks will have the opportunity to rotate among
different practice areas at AAJC in order to gain a wide breadth of experience.
At the end of the summer, clerks will have had exposure to many of the types of
work that AAJC attorneys perform.
Clerks will attend a weekly meeting with the Summer Program
Coordinator to discuss and share the progress of the work with the rest of the
class. This meeting also gives AAJC management an opportunity to ensure that
the clerks are receiving the best experience possible and an opportunity to
correct if necessary.
In addition to the projects, clerks attend weekly brown bag lunches co-sponsored by AAJC and other national civil rights and Asian Pacific American organizations. Other activities may include tours of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Capitol, and the Library of Congress, as well as social activities.
The position is an unpaid/uncompensated position. AAJC can
provide guidance in finding funding resources and housing.
Candidates should submit a cover letter explaining interest in the internship program, resume, a concise writing sample (3-5 pages), 2-3 references, and a transcript (unofficial accepted). Application materials can be sent to Marita Etcubañez, Director of Programs, by email to metcu...@advancingequality.org, or by mail to the address listed below. No phone calls please.
