Dear Friends of SE5 Forum for Camberwell

A special email to update you on the latest news from

CAMBERWELL ARTS FESTIVAL 2012

16th – 24th June

This year’s Camberwell Arts Festival is approaching fast and we’re looking for local volunteers to get involved in the following projects:

TRAVEL GUIDE TO CAMBERWELL

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve just received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a Travel Guide to Camberwell during this year’s Festival.  To help us create this, we’re looking for local writers, photographers and artists – as well as residents who love the area – to get involved.

Whether you are an experienced journalist or someone who hasn’t written anything more than a shopping list since leaving school, we want to hear your take on Camberwell.  We want the Guide to be a unique and unusual take on Camberwell by the people who know it best – and are therefore looking for the personal, the unexpected and the quirky as well as traditional travel writing, historical research and reviews of local shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes etc.

Camberwell is a diverse and interesting part of London, with a colourful history, but for many people it’s just a thoroughfare - seen only from the many buses that pass through.  Travel Guide to Camberwell is an opportunity to challenge this perception and encourage residents and visitors alike to see Camberwell in a new light.

How to get involved

There are two ways to get involved in the creation of the Travel Guide to Camberwell:

1. Join us for one or more of the following drop-in workshops, led by Samantha Cook and Greg Ward, travel writers for the Rough Guides:

Travel writing workshop

Camberwell Library, 17 – 21 Camberwell Church St, SE5 8TR Monday 18th June, 7pm

Travel photography workshop

Camberwell Library, 17 – 21 Camberwell Church St, SE5 8TR Tuesday 19th June, 7pm

Pub and restaurant review workshop

Crooked Well, 16 Grove Lane, SE5 8SY

Wednesday 20th June, 7pm

2.  Email your contributions to:  kelly....@camberwellarts.org.uk / kellyo...@london.com

We can’t guarantee to include all contributions in the printed version of the Guide, but we will put all family-friendly contributions online.

The printed version will be launched in September and distributed locally.

CAMBERWELL TOURIST INFORMATION BUREAU

To kick-start the Travel Guide to Camberwell, we have worked with local artists and residents to create a pop-up tourist information bureau on Camberwell Green.  This will enable people to sign up for tours of the area, collect artist designed posters and postcards about Camberwell, see what’s happening locally and find out more about this year’s Festival programme.

The Camberwell Tourist Information Bureau will be open from 3 – 8pm every day and we are looking for local volunteers to staff it during these hours.  We’re looking for friendly people who love Camberwell and would enjoy promoting the many wonders of the area to residents and visitors alike.

We’ll need to have two volunteers staffing the Bureau at any one time, so if you’re interested in being involved, please email your name, phone number and potential availability during the period from 18th – 24th June

(3 - 8pm) to:  kelly....@camberwellarts.org.uk / kellyo...@london.com

We’ll then get in touch by phone to confirm which hours we’d like you to work and to have an informal chat about what will be involved.
