Philosophy & Rules
Philosophy:
Austin Dynamic 3v3 league is FOR THE PLAYERS. Kids need to enjoy the sport to want to improve. The key focus is FUN! This is an opportunity to develop basketball skills in a fun, non-coached, low-stress environment. We encourage healthy competition in which kids play hard and play to win, but not at the expense of belittling opponents, yelling at officials, or displaying poor sportsmanship. We ask that players and parents conduct themselves appropriately and exhibit good sportsmanship.
Parents/Guardians
- No Coaching. Cheering, however, is encouraged. Let the kids play and figure out some things on their own.
- If necessary, a parent/guardian may sit with the players to help with subbing. They may be asked to leave that area if coaching is occurring.
- All players need completed liability waivers signed by a parent/guardian to participate. If short players, teams may bring subs. Subs are required to have a completed waiver. Subs cannot be members of other teams already registered in the league.
- Help to keep the facility clean. Please pick up garbage and water bottles at the end of your games.
Player Conduct
- No swearing, taunting, or inappropriate verbal or physical behavior. Unsportsmanlike play may result in: 1) Warning; 2) Sitting out (ref discretion); or 3) ejection from the game (ref discretion) or league (league coordinator decision).
- No hanging on the rim or net.
-Players will demonstrate good sportsmanship and shake hands with their opponents
League Format
- Games will be played on July 13th, July 20nd, July 27th, and Aug 3rd. Start time will be between 5pm and 8pm.
- Each team will have 2 games July 13th, July 20nd, July 27th determining their seed for the final tournament on Aug 3rd. 2 game minimum on Aug 3rd.
Game Play
- “Rock, paper, scissors” will determine initial possession of the ball. Alternating jump balls will follow initial possession.
- Ball Size: Boys 6th Grade - 28.5, Boys 7th-9th Grade – 29.5. Girls 6th-9th Grade – 28.5
- Games will be four 5-minute running time quarters. 1-minute between quarters and a 3-minute halftime. There are no timeouts. Short water break may be allowed due to heat or lack of subs.
- Unlimited substitutions when play is dead. Substitutions must be made with urgency to prevent stalling. Delay of game will be called if official feels necessary resulting in one free throw for two points.
- A team may play with 2 players, but cannot play with 1.
- Game is continuous; after any play that results in a change of possession (successful field goal, defensive rebound, steal, block) the ball must be cleared by dribbling or passing to a teammate behind the 3-pt line. The ball is live and able to be defended on the first dribble or on the pass. Defense is not allowed to steal until then.
- Both feet and the ball must go outside of 3-pt line on change of possession. This applies to all changes of possessions, air balls included. No “free backs”.
- Scoring: Normal NFHS scoring on field goals.
- Shooting fouls before the final 2 minutes of each half will be one (1) shot worth the full amount of points. Two (2) points for two pointers; Three (3) points for three pointers. All shooting fouls under 2 minutes in the half will be played normally.
- Fouls on the floor before the final 2 minutes of each half will result in checking the ball up top. Fouls on the floor in the final 2 minutes of each half will result in 1 and 1 bonus free throws.
- Intentional Fouls (no matter when they occur) will result in 2 points PLUS the ball.
- Out of bounds or any other dead ball situation, the ball will be checked up top.
- On the ball checkup, play is live on the first pass or after the first dribble. Offensive players cannot shoot without a pass or dribble first.
- No stalling. There will be a ref’s discretion 30-second shot clock.
- If game is tied at the end of regulation, “Rock, paper, scissors” will determine the initial possession of overtime and will be played first team to score 4 total points.
