Subject: Seeking Biomedical/Life Sciences and Engineering Research Sponsors for Summer Fellowship Programs
To: "Gregerman, Sandra" <sgr...@umich.edu>

UROP runs several summer fellowship programs.  Many of you may have students who are interested in applying to one of these programs and we look forward to receiving their applications. We also have students who are not in UROP and who are looking for potential sponsors. Please let me know if you might have an opportunity for one of these students to work with you this summer. They will need to interview with you and also write a proposal outlining a summer project. Selection is competitive and the applications will be reviewed by a Faculty Selection Committee.

Summer Biomedical and Life Sciences

This program provides opportunities for students attending to conduct full-time (40 hours per week) biomedical and life sciences research with a University of Michigan faculty member for a 10 week period. In addition to the research activities, summer fellows participate in seminars co-sponsored by the Medical School on such topics as research integrity, clinical and translational research, and funding for graduate school and in monthly journal clubs facilitated by researchers from the Life Sciences Institute and Medical School.

The Summer Biomedical and Life Sciences Fellowship program seeks to attract a [broadly] diverse student population, which would include women and historically underrepresented students as well as first generation college students and students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, with the goal of encouraging diverse students to pursue graduate programs in the biomedical and life sciences.  The overall purpose of the program is to encourage students to consider pursuing graduate work in the biomedical and life sciences field by engaging them in an intensive full-time research experience.

The program is currently supported by grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Genentech, the Towsley Foundation, Amgen Foundation, Johnson and Johnson and private gifts from the Marc and Lori Robinson Fund, Tori and Terry Rosen Fund, and the Janet Neary Fund.

Semiconductor Research Fellowship Program

SRC Undergraduate Research Opportunities (URO) is an innovative program co-sponsored by SRC’s Education Alliance that provides undergraduates a $4000 stipend for a 10 week fellowship to work under the supervision of University of Michigan faculty member in science and technology fields related to the semi-conductor computer industry including electrical, chemical, and materials science engineering and physics and chemistry.  Participating undergraduates not only gain confidence in their ability to perform valuable hands-on research and mentoring, but they also come to appreciate the doors that are opened to those with an advanced degree. Participants in the program and alumni of the program will have access to SRC’s internship network (Brookhaven Laboratories, Intel, etc.) and other opportunities.

The objectives of the SRC URO program are to increase academic retention among undergraduates who express interest in physical science and engineering disciplines, and encourage them to continue their education beyond their four-year degree. The SRC URO program seeks to attract a [broadly] diverse student population, which would include women and historically underrepresented students as well as first generation college students and students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. The program also offers workshops and resources to assist students with the graduate school application process.
